L4.41 Software

I have to say that this external storage, upcoming new HD channels and hopes for better PQ have made me more enthused about my satellite television than I have been in quite some time. If they pull off the HD quality potential of MPEG4, this summer will be quite a success for E*.

Now that I see the actual ability on my unit for the external hard drive, I'm going to use these days until the 15th to burn DVDs of the stuff I have on the WD 500 GB drive that I have connected to my PC. Once clear I'll connect it to my 622. It actually helps me to wait so I don't feel rushed to get it hooked up. I wasn't going to bother until I knew this was factually available.

If E* would just have worked out the Indianapolis HD locals they'd have me as a loyal customer indefinitely. As it is, I'm still on the fence but they sure are making progress towards winning me over.

Question about flash memory

Just wondering if one can record a program to flash memory once the hard drive service is turned on an activated? I have a couple of 2 gig flash drives and I know from past experience that a couple of divx movies can be stored on one flash drive so could the 622 do the same.

I read somewhere that drives have to be 40gb minimum. It could be a "recommendation" too though. Then again, I'm not sure what would fit on 2gb of space....

Can anyone let me know exactly what the Ethernet port usage will be? The way I understand it, it will be used for remote programming of the unit via the dish online site. Also, what else is the external HD going to be used for? Is it going to be able to be used via the unit and also have other data on it from my computer? Meaning can I actually use it on both or is it going to have to be dedicated to just the unit? Does anyone know if they would possibly do any free upgrades for sucker like me who paid for the unit?

I have received my software update.

I noticed that several other people have the same problem with Groups as me.

The problem is that we use the Recordings List to notice if there are new recordings that we programmed days ago (or even months ago as a Pass) and forgot about.

The recording showing up near the top of the List is a reminder that the DVR recorded it.

Having that recording immediately go into a group, defeats that capability.

So, groups that occurs automatically is a bad idea - at least for some of us.

What they always talked about in the Tech Forums is a folder system like in Windows - where you manually move recordings into folders, for organization and removing clutter.

Right now it will just allow your box to "call in" as a phone line replacement. We have been told that in the future you will be able to do remote scheduling via the web and that they will activate their IP On Demand service called DishOnline. It has been said that we will be able to select from hundreds or thousands of programs and download them to our box to watch. The fees for this are unknown at this time.

My understanding is that the receiver reformats the external drive so it will only be able to be used for the receiver not with your computer as well.

What kind of upgrade are you looking for? You already have the 622 right?

Hooked up my Seagate 750GB, it immediately told me it needed to be formatted, which it did. Took about 2 mins. After it rebooted, there were menu items for the Manage Device and Send to device under USB Storage in the DVR menu...of course when I clicked on either, it gave me the pop-up that said "TO manage this device, it must be activated...please call blah blah"
This is odd... I hooked up my new USB External HD, and it did not say anything about formatting, and immediately there were Manage and Send choices in the USB Storage menu, with the same "it must be activated" responses if you selected any of them.

But no external HD's come formatted with the same file system as Dish uses, so why didn't it format mine ?

Yes, I have a 622. I was wondering why the $40 charge for existing customers, especially when I paid for the 622. Ugh, sucks being an early-adopter.

kstuart - I hooked my external drive (160GB) to both the front and rear usb. On the rear usb, it was recognized and I was asked if I would like to "manage" it. There was no talk of formatting. Maybe because I use the drive in Windows already. I was, however, unable to actually browse the device or even bring pictures over from it. I plugged my thumb drive (1GB) into the rear usb and it was recognized and I was able to pull pictures from it to the 622.

I've shorten this Quote (to leave more room for me :D)

I haven't played with the ethernet port yet, but did get around to playing with the new menu items, including Groups, and admit I like the new Group function. However, here are some comments.

When in the DVR listing, GROUP was added right below SORT on the menu. The SORT still works, but I wish you could SORT by Date, and then SORT by Date a second time to reverse the order from new-old to old-new; and likewise on the other selections, such as Alpha, etc... No biggy.

Skipping SORT and selecting GROUP.
For those who never record, or never have recorded, more than one showing/episode of a series, will not have any use for GROUP, and it will not provide any benefit; unless the future brings some sort of management tool to create user define folders. But then I wonder if such an enhancement would effect the over-all performance of the box, and/or end up with too many menu's. Plus, the SORT with its sub-menu should provide a suitable option.

With my kids recording many episodes of Looney Toons, Full House, etc..., and the wife recording a whole series of Korean Soaps, I now have a couple of hundred recordings grouped into about 15 selections. So it is really great just the way it is. You can select "Full House", look through them, and then hit cancel to back up one menu to the smaller Group Listing.

When in the GROUP listing, you have a menu which includes SORT, however, it does not allow sorting within the folder. As stated above, it would be nice if I could toggle the sort list from new-old to old-new. But with a smaller number of shows in a listing (Group), it's not as important.

The best part about the SORT & GROUP is it's not permanent, you can easily switch from viewing your recordings via GROUP to viewing them as SORT/DATE, which allows you to start at the top of the list (most recent recording) and see what has been recently recorded. Likewise, you can still hit the DVR button three times to see what will be recorded, what has been recorded, and what has been skipped, stopped, etc...

Almost as easy as opening a MS Excel Spreadsheet and sort using various columns.:)

EDIT:
Looks like the Diagnostic Screen has more menu items than the L409 did.

Also, after playing around with all of the menu's, I went to Purchase History, even though I have never ordered a PPV since around 1997 when they gave me a free one :)up), I then selected DONE, and the system rebooted. After the reboot, I went back into a couple of the menu's and had no problems, actually they seamed to switch quicker.

I suspect that some of the items/menu you select are pulled into memory and the memory is not always effectively cleared when you move from one item to another, causing the system to shutdown. "But what do I know? I have trouble spelling CPU!"

If you have not got the software yet, then try this trick which MAY help it download.
While watching TV, press PIP, then Swap and then PIP again to turn PIP off.
Now put your box in standby for about a half hour.
Sometimes the second tuner is sleeping and this wakes it up. The software is normally downloaded on he second unused tuner. :)
Little black magic :).
Nay, doesn't work, at least if he will check first if his R00/IDs is in current batch.

I'm having the same issue with a spare 60GB drive I plugged in for testing. The drive is a 2.5" WD Caviar in a MassCool enclosure. I've tried unplugging and re-plugging, accessing via menus, etc. I'm not too worried since the feature is not turned on yet.

I was on hold for a while today while making a change to my programming (turned HD back on). When the tech finally came on, we chatted while he updated my account and resolved a minor billing issue. He knew all about the External HDD, Ethernet port, folders, and other minor updates. When I commented that he would be busy on Wednesday with the new DVR Advantage package and HDD activations, he agreed saying that they are expecting tons of calls about the external HDD feature since people have been asking for it for a long time.

Who knows? Maybe Dish is keeping track of the calls they are already getting about external HDD activation to gauge the number of calls they will get starting on Wednesday.

A question for Scott:
Will the external HDD activations begin at 12:01 am on Wednesday morning or at another time? I'm not going to stay up all night to be the first guy, but also do not want to call in during peak call times.

Cheers,

Every two hours? I posted once in here this morning for GOD SAKE! Where's the LOVE????? Guess I have to switch teams and find some love there! lol
RockinHARD26, from the "Find All Posts" feature on this forum:
Yesterday, 03:09 PM "Still no love from dish, got the old software. lol"
Yesterday, 03:18 PM "GOD, where's a ho when you need one? Dish doesn't love me cause I didn't get the update! oh WELL, I'll watch my ITVN 150 porn channels and find love there!"
Yesterday, 10:11 PM "I called DISH, oh what fun! They don't love me anyWAY, no upgrade here"
Yesterday, 10:33 PM "GOD, keep watching your guys post and I'm out of the loop. Its so sad. But oh well"
Today, 09:44 AM "Still no upgraded software. I guess Dish doesn't love me anymore. I'll have to go find some "Direct" love, since they have gay stations like Logo."
Today, 09:46 AM "Sounds like a problem there tiger. Mine doesn't do that, but also mine didn't get the software upgrade either. I guess Dish doesn't love me anymore. I'll have to go find some "Direct-TV" love, since..."
Today, 02:06 PM "Dish doesn't love me anymore.... the gave everyone the new software and forgot about me. lol"
So, I'd say you posted twice today, and several times yesterday. Patience, young weedhopper. I haven't received the new software for either my ViP211 or my ViP622, and the only effect it has on me is to make me write snippy little responses to peoples' posts. :)

wow, Foxbat, I am gonna be careful what I post in this thread from now on..I didnt know we were on posting quotas..

Naw, it isn't about quotas, it is just that several people are tired of reading the same thing from this guy over and over. It is pointless.

You can select "Full House", look through them, and then hit cancel to back up one menu to the smaller Group Listing.
Without having seen this yet my idea may be way off base, but.... How many button presses does it take to hit "Cancel" to back out ?? I wonder if using the '10-sec back' button would be a good "back" button ??

L441: Possible bug

I used to be able to use the alphanumeric keys on my remote to jump ahead to items listed in my DVR recordings list. Now that I am using the Group/Folders option, I can no longer press 6 to jump to the programs that start with M (for example). Previously, this worked - although I was not able to press 66 to jump to programs that start with N.

It is a small bug, but one I hope they resolve. Better yet, make it work like a cell phone so that I can do the 66 trick to get to N!

Cheers,
Red

I've seen a couple things mentioned in this thread that I don't think I've ever done or know how to do. Or.... maybe I have and don't know it...

I've seen reference to "turn off tuner 1 and tuner 2"
Turn off tuners? How do you do that?

And "put the unit in standby mode" ... uh.... how do I do that?

Sorry to sound like a bare nekkid n00b, but I'm not sure I understand how to do these things.
