I've had intermittent ATSC3 reception problems cured by changing a menu setting regarding internet access for interactive services. This may be accessed by Navigate to Settings → Channels & Input → Preferences (Channels) → Interactive application → Turn off the Enable Interactive application setting. Or something similar…might be "Authentication for TV services" on some TVs as the menu titles seem to vary and I didn't double check. Only one ATSC3 channel here (KNBC) has interactive services and those features are slower than dial-up so no loss.
The whole DRM, authentication, licensing, and interactive services via internet remain confusing to me so I welcome clarifications and corrections. How much (or how often) a TV needs internet access if streaming services aren't desired seems uncertain…at least to me.
The Sony TV receives two ATSC3 channels not decoded by HDHomeRun (due to DRM). And, of course Tablo is ATSC1 only. This whole situation is frustrating since ATSC3 signal levels can be better than ATSC1 in my specific location about 60 miles from transmitters.
Thanx for the suggestion. The Sony has both 'Authentication' & 'Interactive' settings. Both were off.
For jollies, turned each on. With the Authentication set on, NONE of the ATSC3 stations would display (got an 'Athentication' message rather than a 'License' message).
The other setting did not seem to make any difference.
I DO have to mention that yesterday afternoon (12/29) both WVIT & WFSB came in WITHOUT any network connection.
However, both are back to the 'License' message this morning.
I'm probably the same 60 miles from the transmitters (plus some rugged terrain).
ATSC3 does a LOT better job at suppressing inteference and making up for low signal levels.
However, I can only vouch for the reception on the Sony. I have a USB TV Tuner, but it only does ATSC v1.
However, if the future of OTA TV is going to REQUIRE Internet (and possibly subscription fees), then I most likely will take down ALL of my TV antennas, and donate the set to Good Will..
