CEDIA-2018 opens on Tuesday and Sony is about to announce its new 4K projector lineup for the US market. Based on what they showed in Berlin last week, the entire lineup will see a refresh: three new projectors, one “entry-level”, one mid-range and one top-of-the line laser set.

A noteworthy hardware change, the projectors will now support full 18 Gbps data rate over HDMI, meaning they should be capable of full 4K HDR at 60 FPS. Also, a reduced lag for gaming and various video processing improvements.

In the meantime, the current least expensive true 4K projector, VPL-VW285ES is on sale as of this morning going everywhere for $3999 or less (was $500 more yesterday). It will likely be discontinued later this week, once the new lineup is announced.

I almost pulled the trigger on the VPL-VW285ES, but now I think I’ll wait to see the new lineup.

  • VPL-VW295ES: Sony states this $5,000 lamp-based projector produces up to 1,500 lumens, and like all Sony projectors it delivers a true 4K 3840 x 2160 resolution.
  • VPL-VW695ES: Positioned as a mid-level projector, the $10,000 VW695ES is rated to deliver up to 1,800 lumens, as well as the Motionflow, HDR compatibility and the 18Gbps signal compatibility the VW295ES delivers.
  • VPL-VW995ES: Using a laser light engine, the $35,000 VPL-VW995ES produces up to 2,200 lumens, and incorporates Sony’s dual-contrast control engine, advanced iris technologies, and the features found in the other new products.
All three products incorporate proprietary Motionflow processing, and they offer high dynamic range (HDR) compatibility and 18Gbps signal compatibility.

The VPL-VW295ES and VPL-VW695ES will be available in mid-October 2018, and the VPL-VW995ES will be available in November 2018.

Sony 4K UHD Projectors Emphasize 5 Critical Performance Traits

The above is a report from a Sony booth presentation, which just took place this morning at CEDIA. I haven’t seen the official press release yet. I am suspicious about some numbers reported above (e.g. the exact resolution). Stay tuned for clarification...

Sony Launches Three New 4K HDR Home Cinema Projectors, Including the Premium VPL-VW995ES Projector with ARC-F Lens
-- Next-generation Projector Models All Provide 4K Motionflow™, 18 Gbps Interface, and Fast 4K Gaming Response Time --

SAN DIEGO, Sept. 6, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Sony Electronics Inc. today at CEDIA EXPO 2018, the global showcase of the future home, announced the launch of three new home cinema projector models to further enhance consumers' immersive viewing experience. Pursuing the highest true 4Kquality for the home, the new VPL-VW995ES laser projector is equipped with an innovative All Range Crisp Focus (ARC-F) lens, which was introduced in 2012 with Sony's first 4K home projector, the VPL-VW1000ES, and is currently found in Sony's flagship consumer projector, the VPL-VW5000ES. The ARC-F lens provides the best focus and resolution across the entire the screen with the new Digital Focus Optimizer function.

Sony's new projectors provide consumers options with the entry-level VW295ES, mid-tier VW665ES and premium VW995ES, while delivering exceptional viewing quality at all levels. All three projectors come with evolved 4K Motionflow technology, which displays smoother and clearer motion by using extra frames to reduce blur, making these projectors perfect for fast moving scenes such as sporting events. The three models also offer film buffs spectacular high dynamic range (HDR) images with fine color gradation thanks to 18 Gbps HDMI and 4K 60P 10bit processing compatibility. To accommodate the growing demand for 4K/60p gaming content, the projectors enable users to enjoy faster response speeds using the input lag reduction feature. On top of it all is Sony's exclusive Reality Creation engine that analyzes every element of an image to provide enhanced clarity and resolution without enhancing noise.

The three new models announced are:

  • VPL-VW995ES – Sony's latest premium 4K laser light source projector contains a prestigious All Range Crisp Focus (ARC-F) lens, an 18-piece all glass lens that ensures high precision in every corner of the image, yet within a compact and lightweight design; alongside this, the addition of the "Digital Focus Optimizer" in the VPL-VW995ES provides refined image quality and accurate focus without distortion; the new dual-control contrast capability employs both a physical iris and a modulated laser to constantly maintain the optimum black level detail and highlight detail from scene to scene
  • VPL-VW695ES – Sony's new step-up 4K model comes with enhanced features such as Picture Position Memory to allow film buffs quickly fit the image to one's screen for any possible format including 16:9 and Cinemascope; it also provides high dynamic contrast of 350,000:1 by use of Sony's Advanced Iris technology
  • VPL-VW295ES – delivers a breath-taking 4K HDR experience at Sony's most affordable price point while adding features from last year's laser model, including a new input lag reduction mode for gamers, Motionflow and Vertical Stretch for 4K signals
"Sony has led the 4K projector market since 2005 by providing models that all include full 4K resolution imagers on all three color channels, delivering 24 million pixels on screen at every instant," said Mike Fasulo, president and chief operating officer of Sony Electronics. "Our newest 4K home cinema projectors set a new standard for features and performance, and the result is an amazing viewing experience."

I don’t see the resolution mentioned. I assume it’s still 4096x2160 (not that it matters much). Also no mentioning of 3D. Crossing my fingers, this wasn’t dropped!

The full specs have been published.
So, it is 4096x2160 as I expected. The CEPro article was wrong.
The projector does support 3D, no surprises there!
And 4K HDR 60P is indeed supported, thanks to the 18 Gbps HDMI.
