NEWBIE Baghdad Bob in Baghdad

Hi,
I am here on Victory base in Baghdad. I have a couple recievers I bought here locally, had one up on top of a trailer, and a signal meter to find first sat. Added a Motor, realize i need something like "Blind Scan" or something more advanced.

I get Turksat with Three or 4 english channnels including Cartoon Network,e-NBC, and another.

I want to find a reciever that will "Find" the sats for me, hopefully store their locations and then be ab;e to scan for transponders and channels.

This is just a hoppy and watching AFN (Armed Forces Network) tv with all the propaganda leaves me wanting more...

I was lookin at The Fortec Star II and then I realized it was a 110v only reciever. I have burned up enough stuff here to know that i need a 110~220volt unit.

One that finds the sats and locks their positions would be GREAT !

I'm here.. Yes I was stationed just NW of Anaconda. I hated Balad as it was the pits, (the actual city not the the base) Your best bet is to point to hotbird @ 13 degree's east. That will get you AFN with a Power Vu receiver and with a Civilian receiver you can get all the Propaganda channels like Aljazeera, Aljahad, Baghdad tv, ect. There are a few English channels on Turk sat like MBC 3 and MBC4 but thats it. Those channels play movies, and stuff like Oprah and 2 1/2 Men. They are actually not bad, they are in English with Arabic sub titles. I would not go with a motor as all the other satellites that you can get in Iraq have repeats of what you can get already on hot bird. Don't even try for Europe's channels on Astra because you cant get them. The beam of the satellite doesn't reach Iraq. Same thing with the Asian channels over in Korea and China. Hope this helps. Also Hotbird has some soft core porn channels on it

If you get the opportunity go to Qatar for an R and R trip. You will love it. PM me with your mailing address and I will send you and your platoon some goodies. IE movies, games ect. Let me know if you need anything stateside, I will try to send it.
