Newsmax dispute is OVER

wasn't there another thread on this very dispute that got locked due to politics reasons.

to sum it up, this is not a conspiracy to censored the network and take away a platform that is very controversial and DirecTV be against freedom of speech, no this is just another typical "paid tv carriage dispute" where Newsmax demanded a rate hike for channel carriage but the amount of viewers that were watching on DirecTV didn't justify the rate hike and DirecTV said, nope, no deal and they haven't renewed the deal in time hence the channel's removal, now DirecTV is still willing to make a deal but Newsmax is still being greedy and blaming it on politics is not gonna help get your channel back on the DirecTV lineup, so instead of bullying the provider, negotiate a deal in good faith.

i personally don't care about the network or it's political views really and would rather DirecTV not cave into their demands.

i don't see this thread lasting much longer anyway.

Ok, keeping politics out of this, I will focus on the economics.

Newsmax wants $1 from each subscriber (per sub fees), no matter if they watch the channel or not, which the vast majority do not, the channel is everywhere, on the Roku also, for free, their average ratings of the whole channel, is in the low 200,000 range, yet they want millions to pay for it.

This was a bad plan by Newsmax, there was no way they were going to get that, now advertising revenue will go down because not as many eyes ( DirecTV and soon more Providers will drop them when they try the same thing).

Newsmax, for its part, has rebuffed that claim, saying it is “seeking a very modest fee” of about $1 per cable subscriber per year when it believes its market rate is $5.

FWIW: A number of small cable operators dropped the channel for low viewership as well. At the end of the day, if you can't attract the eyeballs, then people aren't going to want to pay for your content.

Especially when it is available for free elsewhere.

I think the problem with keeping politics out of it, is that politics have been inserted into it.

At the center of the dispute: Newsmax has demanded DirecTV pay millions in carriage fees to continue including the channel in its lineup. DirecTV has refused, saying that it does not want to pass on added costs to its subscribers for a channel that a small percentage of viewers actually watch. DirecTV has also balked at paying for the same content that streams to users for free on other platforms, such as Roku.

But Newsmax — and Republican lawmakers on Capitol Hill — have advanced a wholly different narrative, one unsupported by the facts in the case. They’ve accused DirecTV — which just added another right-wing talk channel to its lineup — of censoring conservative voices.

Newsmax, led by Chris Ruddy, who is well-connected in GOP circles, has in recent weeks used its platform and political power to pressure DirecTV into paying up.
It is odd for DC to get involved in this carriage "dispute", which isn't even a dispute. Conglomeration has made carriage disputes common (or at least to Dish subs ;)) because there are fewer owners of channels and this has provided added leverage when making deals. The Newsmax situation involved a niche channel wanting to get paid, after paying for their own carriage, and the market said no. Now they are applying unusual pressure and making ridiculous politically charged claims and AT&T / Directv are stepping out and responding. And DC chooses this to get involved?

Looks like the screen they had on direct stream about it being dropped has changed to reflect they carry 6 24/7 news networks and lists the conservative ones.
Newsman has not yet returned to 349. It’s still a copy of 347 The First

The directv site ‘the tv truth dot com’ reflects the agreement

With this deal, Newsmax is being added back to DIRECTV and DIRECTV STREAM. Newsmax will return to DIRECTV tomorrow, March 23rd, 2023.
