NFL 2007-08 Season

I thought Sorgi was the backup.

Sorgi is the Colts back up.
Troy Smith is the back up for the Ravens, behind Boller and McNair who is hurt.

No reason for a 4-12 team to not be able to get the back up and rookie in to see what he can do, what do they have to lose ?

btw, he got in for the last 2 minutes and moved them for a score, even though mostly backups were playing on both sides.

The Lions win the battle , lose the war. What else is new. Offense was everything they told us it would be at the season's beginning, but the defense still can't stop anyone when it matters. The Lions still have a mathematical chance at the playoffs, but what's the point, they'll lose in the first round, and Millen will get another contract extension.

END THE MIILEN ERROR (ERA) NOW!!!
DETROIT LIONS - REBUILDING SINCE 1957!!!

All they had to do was fall on the fumble late in the game and they would have won the game, but in typical fashion, they kicked it back to them and ended up losing ..... :down

How about them Lions! Please fire Millen now. Do not trust another draft to this idiot, or for that matter, another coach hiring. I thought Marinelli was a defensive specialist. The only thing this team knows about "D" , is that it's the first letter in dough.

END THE MILLEN ERROR (ERA) NOW!!

END THE MILLEN ERROR (ERA) NOW!!

Fire Millen! Should have been done four years ago. The only draft picks that have worked out from the Millen error, (Ooops, I mean era), is Ernie Sims. Roy Williams could have been good had he been on the right team. But too many Rookie's get drafted to the Lions and never get a taste of a winning, high class franchise, and it taints their play and attitude so much they seem to lose their love for football. Williams is a classic example of that. He does not give 100% anymore and its all about him. He has the talent. If he was traded to a team like Indy, or New England tomorrow, he would be the the next number one fantasy WR.

I liked Mooch when he was with Detroit. He had the players respect, and they would play for him. There just simply was not enough talent. Mooch became a scapegoat for Millen, and that happens to too many good head coaches in the league. So many owners put too much trust in their GM's. After a couple embarrassing losing seasons and the owner wants some answers from his GM, his GM puts the neck of the head coach on the line.

I like coach Rod. Just remember... he is a great defensive specialist, but look who he has to work with on this football team. The current healthy secondary is consisting of all division II players. They are a joke. I knew going into this season after Bly left that any quarterback the Lions faced this year would have their best opportunity for stats. Their secondary is that bad. This line backing core of Sims, Lehman, and Baily is horrible as well with the exception of Sims. Baily has never shown anything consistent except for injuries, and Lehman was a stud in his rookie year, but is now tainted with the "Lions funk".

Just to explain what the "Lions Funk" is, it is when you know you are either drafted, picked up, or traded to the Lions. You know going in that this is a cut-rate franchise and joke of the entire league. But you are going to give it your all because you are a professional. Once you get there, and get around the other players in the locker room that have been apart of the organization too long, you know... the ones with the bad attitudes because they know its all a joke in that organization, it starts to rub off on you, but play hard anyway. Then you start the regular season, and in the midst of the first losing streak of three games one of the players who has been there a few years says, "yep... here we go again". Then the boos from the home fans, the rants on the sports radio show's, and the columns in the newspapers are heard and read. Then it sinks in just how true your feelings were coming to this franchise. Then the next game you feel like you can't play because you have "turf toe".

That is the "Lions' funk" in a nut shell. And it is going to take one heck of a GM, or head coach to get rid of it. I know it won't be with Millen. IF Marenelli could get more control of his picks, then maybe it could turn around. But I really feel Marenelli will get fired in the middle of next year, and will have more success else where.

Unfortunately Millen is somehow a family friend with the Fords. This is why he has been here so long. When he sits down at the end of this year to assess the season with Ford, he will simply blame the last half of the season on injuries. He will get off the hook again.

The only bright spot for this team is Mike Martz. He gets enough love from the announcers at the games, and more face time on the sidelines than the head coach, that he is going to be gone at the end of this year. (That is my prediction anyway).

Are you guys calling Calvin Johnson a FLOP after just ONE SEASON??

I am not calling him anything yet. Hence why I did not mention his name. He definitely is not producing as much as he should, but it is his rookie year. If you do want to get technical, I would dare say he is not on pace. Now that Roy is out, he has plenty of opportunity, but he has dropped passes and let them slip off his finger tips.

I agree with most of what you've said here ...
That Lion Funk does not encompass everyone.
Chris Spielman never won in Detroit, but he never quit like many others do on a regular basis.

Kitna needs to move on, lions need to find a top notch QB and build around him. I like Kitna's toughness, but he's not the stud QB that they need ....

Lions I'm afraid to say, need to hire Bill Parcells and let him do his thing, he may leave in a few years but they will be in the right direction when he's done. He's done it about everywhere.

Defense, what Defense ... I thought Marinnelli was a D Specialist.
51 points to ANYONE is rediculas.
Your point is well taken about the lack of CB's, I felt it was a huge loss when Dre Bly left .... then again, could you blame him ?

Detroits fall could possibly be related to the Fords realizing that they would not have a top 10 pick this year, they would feel lost having to pick from 15-32 ... at one point they were 6-2 and looking like a team.
Now sorry to say they will will end up 6-10 ... right back where the Lions EXPECT to be EVERY year.

See , it all works out in the wash, they will still have a top 10 pick in April !
Yes, I too think that Martz has had enough and will move on as soon as he can.

But isn't this a different Lions team than last years? New player? New coaching staff? new attitude? I think they are better but just EXTREMELY young...except at QB. I think Kitna is a very reliable BACKUP QB....NOT someome to rely you future on. I think they are REALLY on the verge....they SHOULD draft a QB to groom. Kitna is a bandaid on a wound that needs surgery.

Very well put Salsa,
They are very young, but they have been very young since 2000 and nothing has changed, well actually EVERYTHING has changed, but the results remain the same....

I understand the frustration by Lions fans, but after THAT kind of change, you gotta stick to the change and let it go through its growing pains. It's NOT like they picked up a bunch of talentless players. There is PLENTY of talent on that Lions team.

It is never a different Lions team when you hear what the announcers were saying in yesterday's game. It is something all Lions fans are familiar with, year after year. The phrase goes something like this:
"They need to find something positive to hang their hat on for next season. A win, a close game to a good team. Anything positive to build some steam for the next season".

When you hear that as a Lions fan with three or four games left in the season it sucks. We heard it yesterday, and will for the remaining two games. We have been hearing it for the last 8 years. Before the '98 season took us to the wild card we heard it for another 8 years.

I will put it on record again because it can not be done enough. Since Ford bought the franchise in 1964, they have won exactly one playoff game. They have been to the playoffs exactly twice in that same 43 year period. They have the worst over all record in that 43 year period as well. (Even worse than Cleveland, or Arizona). So I think we all see the real problem here.

I agree that the "Lions Funk" does not encompass every one. But look at the team Speilman was on. They were a winning team then... although not a playoff team, they won none the less.

Speilman was a winner, and his attitude and play reflected such. My favorite was Stephen Boyd before he got hurt with a career ending injury. The guy was small for a linebacker, but was all heart. I remember him having blood coming from some part of his body and he would be in there laying even harder hits.

Oh, no, no, no. Stick to the change and let it go through it's growing pains? What do you think we've been doing for the last 7 seasons? You had the right words, just the wrong order. Your statement should read:
"It's NOT like they picked up a bunch of TALENTED players. There is plenty of TALENTLESS PLAYERS on that Lions team."

Now an opinion on Martz: This guy will be gone next season, probably not for the reason you guys think. He will be fired. This man is the most inconsistent, overrated coach we have here. Before you tell me about the offensive line (I already know they suck), keep in mind that this line only gave up one sack (on the last play of the Dallas game) in the last 2 games. Now look at what the offense did last week, and what they didn't do this week. There has been no consistency from week to week. I'm not even sure they really have a game plan. All I see is confusion.

The Defense? Jimbo you're right. If this guy (Marinelli is a defensive guru, I'm not seeing it. Take a look at the road losses. They gave up an average of 42.8 pts. Even Miami isn't that bad. Gurus find a way to make the talent (or lack of talent in this case) respectable.

Who's fault is this? William Clay Ford. For now though, lets just blame MILLEN. He's hiring the coaches, drafting the players, and signing every worthless free agent in sight. His drafts have been a huge bust. (We had bigger needs than Calvin Johnson). There have been a few good choices (Williams, Jones, and most certainly Sims) and there have been the countless players who aren't here anymore. (Harrington, Rogers, Mike Williams.) And how about those trades? Bly for Foster and Bell. Neither has even dressed for the last 4 weeks. Williams and McCown for a 4th rd. pick that didn't even make the team. I could go on and on, but it just gets worse.

Here's an interesting theory being kicked around here: It's not all Millens fault. Maybe Ford fancies himself as a GM and Millen has the job because he is willing to do exactly as Ford says, and Millen is just the puppet. Just another Russ Thomas. (Remember him?). I'm only buying halfway into this theory. But seeing that this team has been consistently bad through out Ford's ownership, and he's the only constant..... Coaches, GM's and players have come and gone, yet the stink remains. The losing attitude is passed from player to player, year to year, just as Joedecock said. The problem is the solution to that is to fire and cut everyone, and start fresh. Not possible.

My solution? Have Ford sell the team. (Not going to happen). Well how about we find some real football people to take over, (like Mr Illitch has done with the Wings and Tigers), and then get the hell out of the stadium, and let them do their job. Yep, another rebuilding project. Actually the rebuilding has been going on (all together now boys and girls)

SINCE 1957!!!!

Man did love those guys. Who else but Spielman would play a whole season with a torn pectoral muscle and lead the team in tackles. A guy Millen would love, yet how many of these type of players do we have now? One- Sims.

You know what, I like Kitna, but he is not going to lead us to the Super Bowl. By time this team is ready he will be too old. Better to start over with new blood, that can grow with the team. The problem is Ford wouldn't know a good QB if he hit him in the ass with a pass. I guess I'm saying that you're right. ( Again? It was more fun when I didn't agree with you. I don't know who you are, but you better bring our Salsa back!)

LMAO!! Paul, you and I agree on alot more than you think...just different teams with more or less the same problems. I don't know what to tell you, you guys have what we deperately need(speed at the WR position) and we have what you guys need(a franchise QB with legs and arm to get the ball TO the WRs). I feel VERY optimistic with the Raiders. A good blend of REALLY OLD players(thank GOD they are sitautional players that we really don't really on TOO heavily....except Warren Sapp)and young hungry players. They have drank the Kiffin cool-aid and they have been in ALL games but 2 of them. This reminds me of the Colts of the EARLY Manning days or the Cowboys of the early Troy Aikman days....2-14, 2-14, 4-? and WHO KNOWS next year. We will have a couple of #1s, if I am not mistaken and a total of 8 pics in the draft.
You can pick-up alot of talent with 8 picks.

Salsa, I think you said previously that the Raiders would be in the Super Bowl before the Lions would. I'm here to say that you couldn't be more possibly right. We have talent at wide receiver (how could we not, we've tried about 50 different guys before we settled on this group), a very talented, but misused RB (Kevin Jones), and one talented player on defense (LB Sims). The rest are either quality backups for talented teams, or wouldn't even be in the NFL if it weren't for the Lions.

I have been a Spielman fan since his senior year at Massilon, Ohio.
High School Football hotbed in OHIO for those of you that don't know, simular to the school that Ted Ginn and Troy Smith came from is now, out of Cleveland, sorry, I can't remember th schools name exactly. Might have been Glendale, but I'm not sure, one of the Cleveland guys will tell us.)

When Stephen Boyd came along, to be he was the closest to Chris I have seen in a long time.
