 does the ps3 downscale blu-ray movies on 1080i only tv if the movie is 1080p thanks to all

It plays the movie at 1080i. The only time the PS3 downscales is during game play. If the game only plays at 720p and your HDTV can not accept a 720p signal then the PS3 downrezs the game to 480p.

I think if you have a TV that only takes a 720p (not 1080i) signal, then BR movies will be in SD 480p. Not sure if I have ever seen a 720p only TV, tho. :)

No, that is not true. If you want to display at 720p for BluRay then the movies will display at 720p. The BluRay on the PS3 can display at 1080p, 1080i, 720p and 480p. If the movie your are playing is a BD movie then it will display at your highest resolution.

The ONLY TIME the PS3 downrezzes is during games. If you have a 1080i set that can not accept a 720p signal and the game outputs only at 720p then the PS3 will downrez the output to 480p. This is during game play only and not for BD movie playback.

I dunno, according to this
http://nathanpitman.com/journal/495/ps3-downscales-blu-ray-to-480p-on-720p-hdtvs
the PS3 doesn't do 720p blu-ray playback.

Thats a pretty bad reference, this one over at AVS is better.

Like I said tho, I don't know any TV that accepts 720p but not 1080i. However, that thread does list one issue you could have:

Most 720p displays scale 1080i content buy converting the 1080i signal to 540p and then up-scaling to 720p.
