Hi, I'm hoping someone knows what is happening to my R20. It just started giving me problems when changing channels. It takes so long to switch that my TV goes to input mode (black screen). I'm using a HDMI cable. I tried to switch to RCA and it was a little better, it went to a all gray screen but still took longer then normal.

Do I need a new receiver? My second question is which is better R16 or R22. I noticed that the R16 does not have a HDMI connection, why would they take this feature away?

Thanks for any help!

Welcome to the site.

What is the recvr your using ? D* doesn't have a R20. Is it a High Def unit (H20) or a HD Recorder (HR20) ?

The others you mentioned, R16 and R22 are SD DVR's.

How do you have the unit connected to your TV ?
What available options are there on your TV as well as the Recvrs ?
HDMI will from time to time have "HandShake" issues, causing a delay, but not that much, also changing the Native setting will also help with the channel changing a bit.

I don't know what you current set up is yet.

It's a R22, just checked the back of the box.
Straight to the TV with a HDMI cable.

No other receivers. Options?

I have had this setup for a couple years and have not changed anything. The problem just started.

I also tried a different HDMI input on the back of the TV and there was no change.

Thanks!

the R22 if you have a HD receiver on the account Directv can "turn" on the HD option making the R22 a HD receiver. If the only receiver on the account its SD only

The R16 is a SD only receiver

OK, so your using a HDMI cable and you changed the cable to try to correct it and it didn't help.
You haven't had this issue all along ?
Something that just started ....

Have you tried rebooting the box yet ?

Menu-Set Up-System Set Up-Reset-ReStart Recvr-dash

Give that a try ...

No problem before, it just started yesterday.

I unpluged (cold start) and reset a couple times... no change.
Also did a system test... no problems found.

I don't plan on getting HD, unless it becomes free.

Knowing this is one unit superior to the other? R16 vs. R22

Just tried putting the receiver on another TV and had the same delay when changing channels.

Does anyone know where I can buy a new R22? I just want a SD DVR with HDMI.

You mean "Lease " ?

Solid Signal usually has them, but are not available at the moment.

ya lease.

Just called them, R22 is discontinued, looks like I will have to buy a R16. I told them about the problem I'm having and the guy thinks the tuner is dieing.

I would inquire about a HR22 before I would a R 16.
You can set a HD recvr to handle SD too.

I would, but DTV makes you pay for HD if you buy a HD receiver, I can't lease it and just use it as a SD receiver. I would also need a new dish for HD. I don't think $10 a month for HD is worth it.

$ 10 for all the HD channels D* has is not a bad price at all, unless you can get it for free :D

Have you looked at what the Cable companies charge for it.
