I live with a dtv skeptic; so is it possible to maintain cable service up unto the time dtv goes online. I dont know how dtv works in order to get the signal up to the actual device ( does it also use a coaxial?, does it use the same coaxial already installed, does it use fairy dust to carry the signal, etc.)

I anticipate murphys law and wish to switch back to cable if the dtv falls short.

You can have both DTV and cable. They cannot 'share' the same coax though. Each has to have its' own.

Be aware that cancellation of DTV before your contract expires can inccur hefty 'early canncellation fees'.

Direct is so much better than cable you really don't have anything to worry about.
