i saw a scientific atlanta box at a resale shop and it looked like a sat rec. it states that it is supposed to be hooked to another receiver for ota signals. anyone know what this could be used for? there was also a pioneer.

depend on the model. D9222 is junk.
D9223/9225/9230/9234 can be used for DVB FTA, BUT they will drive you nut when programing them. They are designed for head-end, to be set to tune to one channel and leave it there. No remote control for D9223/9225/9230.
For the D9234, you must have a remote control to get into the hidden menu to program it.
Anyways, grap them if they are free, avoid them at any cost they are not free...
