Shocking News: McGwire Admits Using Steroids!!!!

I just can't believe MLB and the Union were so stupid/negligent/blind while this was occurring. In a generation or two, soccer is going to replace baseball in the pecking order of pro-sports in the USA and this WWE style cheating will be one of the reasons why.

Short-sighted disgusting greed. Way to be a steward to the game, Mr. Selig.

Had NOTHING to do with being blind. Hell, they even made commercials about it.

..."chicks love the long ball..."

The home run brought in a$$e$$ in the seats....and in the end, that is ALL the owners want. That is JUST ONE of the many reasons I never side with the owners.

This thread is about McGwire though.

If the numbers themselves aren't stark enough for you, how about a graph of those numbers?? What's the saying, a picture is worth a thousand words??

Look at the numbers before '93 when he was clean and after '94 when he was dirty.

The PEDs made him stay healthy. Made him workout MORE. The PEDs...as I have stated, did not make him stronger NOR a better ball player. Made him get healthier faster from injuries.

You still have to see the ball, hit the ball. McGwire was not a "warning track power" hitter.

...but if some of you still wanna keep saying it to yourselves.....cool...I guess everyone can have their opinions.

So A + B does not = C? Is this what you're saying?

From your own example...

a) PED's made McGwire stay healthy so...

b) he could work out more, but...

c) they DID NOT make him stronger?

Isn't that the point of working out? To make you stronger? If he was not on PED's, he wouldn't have been able to work out as much, thus, not ever becoming as strong.

The point to workout is to stay stronger to be healthier. You, and many here, have assumed that because you took PEDs, it made you a better hitter and an instant home run hitter. The Mitchell Reports has TONS of guys where their home run count double....yeah from 4 to 7 or from 11 to 17....yeah....HUGE jump. You know full well that as some of the baseball players mature, the production can fluctuate due to their development.

AGAIN, PEDs helps them recoup to be able to stay healthier and stronger longer. DOES NOT make you an instant home run hitter and it does NOT make you a better ball player.

Bzzzz. You don't power-lift for health. Do some cardio if you want exercise for your "health".

PS. Do you work for the MLB Players Association? You are going to awfully far lengths to defend the reasons these guys took drugs.

I've never claimed that. My claim has always been the steroids greatly benefitted McGwire somehow. The numbers are clear. Whether it made him stronger, made him healthy enough to workout and therefore extend his career, etc., it really doesn't matter.

Crunching "your" numbers shows McGwire was a much better home run hitter while using steroids than before. He hit a fair amount while clean but whether you contribute it to strength, improved health and the ability to play more than his body would allow before taking them, or an act of God as he claims, it's clear that he hit many more after juicing.

For comparison, look at this HR graph of Hank Aaron's career. Note the steady numbers that don't miraculously improve over the second half....

NBC's Brian Williams on Mark McGwire

Good evening. Because this is a family broadcast, we probably can't say what we'd like to about the news today that Mark McGwire—the home run hitter, the family favorite from the St. Louis Cardinals—stopped lying today and admitted that he did it while on steroids. For those of us who were raising young baseball fans and baseball players who looked up to Mark McGwire, that summer of ‘98 was magical stuff, as he and Sammy Sosa vied back and forth for the title of Single Season Home Run King. He didn't tell the truth to Congress or to his fans until finally, formally coming clean today. He's been unable to get into the Hall of Fame and, apparently—even for him—the shame here was too much.

SLAM!

Excellent points by Jon Heyman, which specifically address what we've been going back and forth on here:

Mark McGwire had to talk steroids, but his story doesn't add up - Jon Heyman - SI.com

Specifically:

In a plainly ridiculous claim, McGwire steadfastly maintained to Costas that he took steroids strictly because of health concerns, not to get a competitive edge. And in an even more ridiculous contention, McGwire further claimed that he didn't get an edge, either -- that he would have hit 70 home runs at age 34 going on 35, and performed all of his other superhuman exploits, without steroids. His explanation was that he was just a rare, God-given talent who got even better as he got old.

Of course, on their face those are preposterous assertions. Though we shouldn't be surprised that McGwire couldn't be completely honest. After all, this is a guy who spent the past 20 years cheating, lying, stonewalling and hiding.

If that were true then why apologize to Maris' widow?? Costas conveniently left that question out....

Costas left a LOT of questions out. The interview was clearly set up as a softball question festival, with no follow-up questions to address the contradictions in McGwire's statements.

Most people believe what the numbers tell us. McGwire's home run totals took off AFTER he started taking steroids. That's crystal clear, not murky at all. ;)

McGwire also admitted to taking Human Growth Hormone.

His batting average also went up after he started using PED's also. Saw that on ESPN the other day. I found that a little interesting. Salsa, you might want to take note of that. It wasn't a small increase either, from .249 to .274.

The batting average is perhaps a coincidence, perhaps not. But as Heyman said, the home run proficiency is very CLEAR.
