some basic newbie questions

I was wondering what the best dish, receiver and what channels one could revceive fta? I was going to use a old directv dish, buy a single lnb and put a motor on it. Is this ok (it's a 5lnb dish), or should i get a dish with a motor on it? I would appreciate any imput.

dish is too small. You would need a 30" or larger dish and a KU Band LNB

If being a "mountaineer " fan means you're on the east coast, you probably should opt for a 90cm motorized kit ( 36" dish/motor/lnbf) . You'll appreciate the greater gain of the 90cm dish and the price is almost the same as a smaller dish.
