Streaming from the Edision with VLC

Since I managed to start Open WebIF in the Edision I decided to see about streaming the elusive 4:2:2 ABC/CBS channels. I managed to stumble right into it. Here's what I did. Started "Open WebIF" by entering the IP address of the Edision in my browser (chrome).

Now since the Edision was turned off at the time, I turned it on with the on-off switch.
The current channel was displayed in the upper left.
I clicked on the Satellite tab, selected the drop down list of channels for the 99W sat and selected the ABC channel I wanted to view.

I hit the Stream link button on the upper left and downloaded the m3u8 stream file. (lower left)

I closed my browser with Open WebIF, went to the download folder and opened the m3u8 file with VLC

Either I'm not understanding this or it doesn't work for me. I was thinking you could do that at first but couldn't figure that out. When I click the TV icon it downloads a m3u8 file, nothing else.

IIRC take that file path name and copy it and then in VLC go into the media drop down to 'Open Network Stream' and paste that path into the box and it should start to play back.

Right click on the file download and select to always open. This will automatically launch the media player when the TV icon is clicked.

Is there a prefered place to download VLC? Or alternatives others prefer?

VLC and other media player software include the license to decode this format.

I noticed after using Open Webif for streaming the channel selection switches from video to radio channels. Had me going for a few. I thought I had wiped my channel list out somehow.

The .m3u files can be stored on your desktop and next time just clicked to launch the channel.

For extra points... in VLC find the Playback > Renderer menu and you'll find Chromecast devices on your home network so you can cast whatever channel is playing in VLC to a TV. This is useful for feeds like ABC and CBS and for any TV that your satellite receiver isn't directly connected.

I would like to stream directly to the VLC App on my Sony TV. I don't think my TV will let me download an M3U8 file. I know its IP address. How can I have my OS Mio 4K+ stream via UDP to my TV's IP address and some arbitrary port? Is it possible?

The other possibility is MiraCast. But then I would tie up my Macbook Pro laptop.

UPDATE:

I got it to work by typing in the http address listed in the M38U file. It took a while to type in using the remote control and the arrow keys, but it works.

Below is the M3U8 file. All I did was enter the http address line into VLC running on my Sony Bravia.

The above is a local channel using my OTA tuner dongle. But if I change channels on the OS Mio to another local OTA channel or a satellite channel, it doesn't change the channel on the TV. I would need to enter the new numbers in the http line.

It would be great if there was a way to skip having to enter the long M38U address and just tell the OS Mio to stream whatever is playing to a given local IP address and port #.

Funny how Firefox does it so seamlessly. Chrome is another animal.
But.
There is an extension for Chrome to open M3U8 files with VLC.
You have to dive into the extension and set the path to the VLC executable. Kinda' like:
C:\Program Files (x86)\VideoLAN\VLC\vlc.exe
I found the same issue. Clicking on a channel downloaded the file. Setting the open with preference....no joy.
Had to click on it to launch VLC.
Now it's one click. At least for me.
Good God! Dreamdroid is a PITA. On my Sony or Fire Cube.
Oh! And if you haven't bought a BT kb & mouse for your streamers or smart TV.
You don't know what you're missing.

Not so seamlessly like it was a few months ago before a Firefox upgrade was done. Now I have to download the file, click on overwrite if I downloaded that service before, and then click on launch. There's probably a way to fix that but I'm too lazy to bother.

That's nuts. There is also a plugin for Firefox.
I don't have it installed. Running the 32bit version and it's ver 100.0
The 64bit version you may be running might need the plugin.
I swear! I opened the webif. Clicked on a channel on the current sat. FF downloaded it and immediately opened it in VLC. And I believe the 64bit version of FF on the PC in my garage will even move the dish. But noticed my 32bit ver. here freaked it VLC out requiring a 3-finger salute.
