One of my 722k's is flaking out, intermittently freezing and restarting, so I called in to get it swapped out. The rep said that my system is "obsolete" and that I should upgrade to Hopper. After making clear I want no Hopper, she said she had "sent her strong signal" to my ailing receiver. I told her that I had already checked signal levels and they were good. She then asked me to unplug it, and I asked why, given that it's currently running fine, and this has been of no help previously. She then said that as long as currently working she couldn't proceed any further. So I asked her to clarify that support could not proceed until it fails again, and she affirmed. So I asked to be given to Tech Support. She stated that she was TS, so I asked for supervisor. After a long hold in utter silence with no indication the call was even still connected (I actually thought they'd hung up) a guy comes on to pick things up. He said that the 722's obsolete but that without doing Hopper it could possibly be swapped out for a Wally but there'd be no 2nd user or DVR.

I was beginning to think he was going to stick to his guns on that but then he started in with some other stuff including that my bad receiver is only 720p. I retorted that I know that's incorrect and that the 722 is 1080i HDTV. He also stated that it's 19 years old (not) and they don't have any. I told him that I know it's not still being produced and don't expect a new replacement, but rather to receive a refurbished unit and I'll send this here one back. He then consented to sending a refurb and told me that they won't be needing mine back.

At least I didn't have to go to my last card, the "c" word. This took me straight back to my dealering days!

Dude, we've been telling you for a while that your 722 is obsolete.
I happen to have 5 - 722's in my shop in Bloomington.
Call Dish, get a w/o built for any reason. Tell them a tree fell on your Dish or something. DM me when the appointment is, and whoever comes to your appointment, I'll make sure they have one of those receivers to swap out for your old one. And you KNOW I'm gonna ride along just to finally meet someone from the forum!

I called them in large part to see how they would do. I was prepared for the Hopper push, and clearly 99% of callers in my position would have been suggested or railroaded into that. I was prepared to source one from the resale market but after all of the wrangling which really took me back in time to all those marathons with them in customers' homes, they apparently blinked and are sending out a 722 (no service call). Funny how he then switched gears to tell me the thing will install itself....Probably wouldn't try them again even if the one they send has trouble...

There's that "o" word again- what makes these receivers obsolete? Simply because they aren't hopper? They don't stream? Because they're greatly fail-prone and it's not worth it either to me or to DiSH to continue to support? They've already said they don't need mine back, and I can only imagine that they're drowning in them from all their pressurized hopper switchovers. I don't see any change technically or systemically on any horizon that would preclude continued use.

What is in it for them to completely re-do a house for hopper & joeys when the customer isn't requesting that and simply sending out a refurb will keep him happy?

What makes them obsolete is Dish is going to deactivate them so they no longer work. You cannot get a Work Order for a new connect with a VIP receiver. And they will no longer send out refurb'd VIP receivers in the same way they did with the older SD receivers.

But, like I said, I have 722's so I can get you back up and working and not forced into a Hopper

I would like to meet you HipKat. Come meet me and replace my 1000.2 dish for one of them there new Western Arc two LNB models!! 😇

Why? Is that what's brought this one down? Can you replace them with something?

I just don't see them "shutting off" running ViPs with no technical need to do so. Not installing for new service I get that. Also I doubt they'd turn away business from a self-installer who buys one on eBay and wants to new-account activate.

How does a poor mans hopper even begin to make sense when you can buy a hopper 3 with a joey 3 for bouts 65-70 smackers off of ebay. hoping it's clean after running the numbers🤔. atleast you can expand and upgrade the hopper 3 later on :)

They've already said they don't need mine back

A friend of mine worked for the local phone company long ago when home phones were leased and he tells me stories of taking a phone out of a residence and first tightly wrapping the cord around the holes and then sealing it in a bag so the bugs couldn't get out in his truck. Then he'd get yelled at by the guy who opened the bag.

These days most companies prefer to leave the disposal/recycle/e-cycle task to the customer.

As for the disk in a 722, I think it works with a small selection of 2014-era hard disks. I guess the hard disk vendors moved on as well.

But I've heard a lot of griping about hopper. Does it require a talk-back link to DiSH?

Also I'm highly unimpressed with the remotes they've put out for those.

Oh, I see from other thread the older ones will work with...intersting

what do you mean by a talk back link an internet connection if so then no it does not though you won't get things like on demand ppv and some of the streaming channels and or apps.. if you ever need support on it they might want you to connect it to the internets so they can do a remote in to see what's going on with it

There are always gripes about new stuff.

That's why I still have my Altair 8800. It's been free of malware, fees, and UI changes since 1975. Seriously, I really do still have my Altair, though I don't use it for anything other than nostalgia. It's hard to fit a web browser in 24K - which was a huge amount of memory for an Altair in 1975.

I have held on to other older things for long periods. For example, my home was an alpha test site for DSL. So, it was one of the first 10 homes in the US with DSL. It might have also been one of the LAST 10 homes with DSL since I only got rid of it last year! And only then because the ISP said the main cable out of my neighborhood was bad and they had no intention of ever replacing it. (They had already switched me to different wire pairs about 6 times.)

Turns out 1Gbps fiber is even better then 768Kbps DSL - who knew?!?!? :eeek

I had my 722 until about a year ago. My Hopper DVR fee was waived for 2 years. At the time people were wondering if Dish Network would still exist in 2 years so I thought 2 years was fine. I don't miss much about the 722, and I really appreciate 16 tuners - admittedly I don't think I've ever recorded more than 6 things at once, but with the 722 I was constantly managing priorities and skipping and restoring because 2 tuners wasn't really enough. Now it doesn't matter at all what priority something is, and that alone makes me prefer the Hopper.

I got used to the remote on the first day. I was prepared to use one of the older many-button remotes (you can) but after the first day, I felt no need. YMMV of course.
