tivo question on a vip 622

can you hook up a tivo to a vip 622 and have 4 tuners.or do one dvr lock out the other.
A TiVo cannot tune satellite programming so it ends up being a single program recording device when connected to a satellite receiver. TiVos are relatively limited for satellite use.

but will it work?
Not in the way that the original question was posed. You can record a single program in SD resolution from the TV1 output and you would need to relinquish control of TV1 for the duration of the recording.

The TiVo won't magically add tuners to the ViP622.

Nor will it subtract any either! The OP phrased that question oddly, and it's hard to tell what he or she wants to do. But the 622 has 2 satellite tuners and 1 OTA ATSC tuner, and that's independent of any external boxes. So all those tuners can be used to DVR programs. Add a Tivo and you've got whatever tuners the Tivo has. (I don't know which model you have, but I would guess it has another OTA tuner, either an ATSC or NTSC tuner, or both.) If the Tivo has an ATSC tuner, then it can record OTA broadcasts independently of the 622. If it has an NTSC tuner, you could play back either a recorded program or a live program from the 622 and record it (again?) onto the Tivo. It all depends on what you want to do.

I disagree. While the TV is recording, TV1 is entirely unavailable for other uses.
While what "TV" is recording? Now you're being as cryptic as the OP!

Sure, while TV1 or 2 output is being used for recording on a Tivo, if TV1 or 2 is being used to play back and record live TV, then indeed the TV1 or 2 input cannot be changed. But if the TV1 or 2 output were being used to play back a previous recording, then TV1 or 2 or the OTA input tuners on the 622 are not precluded from recording something else, such as 2 sat programs and 1 OTA program. Operation in this fashion is non-blocking.

It all depends on exactly what the OP wants to do, and when he wants to do it. I might guess that he wants a retrievable softcopy of his programs, and he can easily do this (?) using a Tivo. So his plan might be to record everything twice, once on the 622, and then later on as time allows on the Tivo.

Fixed that late-night boo-boo.

The assumption I made was that the OP wanted to be able to record four (or five!) different programs at once using the automatic TiVo functions and that's not possible. Without the special TV2 IR adapter the TiVo can automatically control only TV1.

TiVo's own compatability page declares that the HD TiVos are not compatible with satellite at all. They feature only an antenna input as opposed to the SD models that also have composite and S-video inputs. Either way, what the TiVo records is going to be a compressed SD version of the original from the ViP622.

Or one could use the timer of the Dish STB and set the Tivo for manual recording at the same start and stop times (could use the Dish guide for easy timer event for the Dish box only) and the output of the Dish STB will be recorded on the NTSC Tivo tuner. Of course, there will be no title information nor any other info and the event will be labeled "Manual Recording." One has to be careful to set the Tivo for the same time as the Dish box.

I do this on rare occasion if I want to use one of my NON-DVR Dish STB's to record an event in the room where I have the Tivo so that I can watch it there. I have several STB's RF going to this room for use with other DVR's (Panasonic DVR/DVD recorder) and Tivo. I use it for SD services

Of course, the OP could make his desire clear.
