VIP612 OTA possible without Dish sub?

Hello all,

I was recently given a Dish VIP612 HD DVR by my neighbor who was moving.
The VIP612 does not have a card and is not currently attached to a Dish subscription plan.

I was wondering if it would be possible to utilize the VIP612 as a OTA receiver to receiver HD programs without a Dish subscription?

First check with DISH to find out if they own the 612 most are leased.

You need a DISH sudscription to receive OTA.

I believe you will get a message that says, "this receiver is not authorized please call 1-800-xxx-xxxx". But you could always plug it in and see if the receiver will prevent you from scanning local channels. It may not have gotten the disconnect notice from dish thru sat connection, if it did or you hook it up to any working sat cable it will shut you down. I believe. JMO
