Voom announces intent to introduce a HD DVR in the summer

Lack of a pvr is one of the reasons I haven't subscribed to VOOM yet. Hopefully they will get it out the door on time.

From what I read someone else say, since they will be using MPEG4, they can't do a firewire out. According to them, Firewire out is just compatible with MPEG2. I guess what they are saying is that the DVHS decks record MPEG2 and can't record MPEG4. Maybe they can do a Firewire out anyway, and a future DVHS deck will be able to record MPEG4?

Can't wait to get my hands on one! :D

They figure if you can stream the video to any TV in your house there is no reason to offer firewire to be able to record to a D-VHS recorder.

Thank you for your interest in VOOM.
The component video output on the VOOM receiver will output in the following formats:
1080i, 720p, 480i, 480p
Due to the fact that VOOM is the only HDTV provider that employs copyright protection in our signal, we are not being urged by the MPAA to downgrade our component video output to 640p. So with VOOM you can get true 1080i even if you do not have DVI. We are looking to release our DVR receiver, the Motorola DSR580, at some time in the third quarter of this year. While at this time I do not have any specific information on its release, you can read more information on this receiver by clicking on the following link:

If you have any further questions please contact us again either through our web site located at http://www.voom.com or by giving us a call at 1-800-GET-VOOM and once again thank you for your interest in VOOM - HDTV Delivered!

Pricing structure speculation for multi-head DVR rcvr

Any guesses on pricing structure? I would be willing to bet that if you leased one of these multi-headed receivers, but had no remote heads, it would be about the same fee as they have now. But - I bet that they charge you a monthly fee for each remote head unit (plus rental) - since to do a similar thing with the current hardware you would have multiple receivers and the associated fee. I would not bet on any free luch here - that would not be a smart business decision - but hopefully they keep it reasonable.

God, this is the first time I've read about the PVR. I'm just starting up with VOOM in May doing the Rental Option on my two receivers. I'll definitely be trading up to this when it comes out. It sounds incredible.

I have installation scheduled for April 27th. When I was on the phone with VOOM CSR he told me that everyone will be upgraded to DVR for free when it released. :yes
I'm not sure if he knew what he was talking about, but that sounded great!

Yeah, that would be wonderful. Especially if you can use the existing boxes as Thin Clients. I could return one of my existing thin client receivers and replace it with the DVR on my main TV and then keep the other Reciever in the bedroom.

I'm going to use a wireless transmitter to push an SD signal down to our other main TV which can only do SD.

hot off the press

Just spoke to a Motorola STB guy here at NAB today...found out that the VOOM PVR/DVR box will have a 160GB disk drive which by the time that they release the product to VOOM, may be a 250GB...we did a back-of-the-napkin calculation and found out that it could have as much as 40 hours of HD (with a 160)...

Also, I complained about the totally weak remote...He said that VOOM gave them less then 3 months to build and ship the STB boxes to consumers...

I saw the DVR at CES as well.. and I was impressed by the demo. I cant wait for the final product!

Will everyone who rents the equipment be upgraded? Will equipment rental go up? Will it be a whole new box or an upgrade to the ones already out (please be a new box with no lockups, screen issues, and a good guide :) )?
