[VOOM] Re: Echostar Communication Buys Ranibow 1

It is frustrating to deal with your negative and one sided viewpoint. As I
said you are right; leases and lawyers are irrelevant.

Remind me not to get any stock tips from you, Keith. But if 2/1 is the

Re: [VOOM] Cablevision Sells Satellite Business

Hi Robert,

Thanks, I think. Had just gotten on the net after
being off for several hous-busy at work and then went
to a community meeting-and was looking up VOOM's map
address to check on the city and ran across the sale
on a Google search. Came immediately to hear and you
confirmed the bad news. Guess it's just a matter of
when they pull the plug. We're unlikely to go with
Dish. Now we have to figure out a way to get the sat
antenna off the roof although we'll keep our $499 OTA
antenna for use with our old Samsung STB.

I'll still monitor the VOOM forum until such time it
is no longer necessary.

[VOOM] Concerning Wilt-I don't think he is about to jump off of the...

Empire State Building. Although I'm sure the original engineering on
VOOM was his baby he works for Cablevision and made clear on this
board a long time ago that he would be staying with Cablevision should
VOOM get spun off as a separate entity.

------------------------

Maybe ask Rupert Murdoch about that. I'm pretty sure he had some hotshot
lawyers do their homework before entertaining a merger with DISH. But in the
end it didn't fly. I don't have the gov't commentary to review, therefore I
can only guess.

On the funding deal, I live in the Republic of Kal-ee-forn-ee-a as our
Governor likes to say. We yearly go through a circus act known as the budget
debate. It's 50/50 odds that the State will operate beyond June 30th of any
given year without a budget in place. Funny thing is most of the State
continues to run. They don't just roll up the sidewalks and go home.

I'm still hoping you can explain to me how the Chairman of the Board of
Cablevision was so blind to this pending Echostar deal that he would issue
an internal memo at would be the equivalent of 11:59pm on the clock. You
stated that after the spinoff was nixed, that would give 30 days for them to
have been working the deal rather than the 24 hrs I posted sarcastically.
How does someone as bright as Dolan Sr. get blindsided by a sales contract
that probably had the ink drying on it about the time he releases this
memo?????

Keith, please don't forget that I could care less one way or another how
this pans out. I'm out nothing but the monthly bill, plus the fact that I
will have to settle for a lesser quality service. I think it's just odd that
many of the actual facts don't quite add up.

What do you figure E* will do with that redundant uplink facility? Perhaps
lease it? Hmmmm. Maybe there are more twists to this soap opera yet.

If they pull the plug on 2/1, then they move to zero revenue while still
dealing with operating costs on a pending sale that may take months for
approval. Another angle that doesn't make much sense.

[VOOM] After reading through all the posts here and satguys, those I feel sorry...

for are the VOOM employees. In the 13+ months we've been with VOOM
we'd had frequent contact with people who really cared about their
jobs with VOOM. Needless to say, Wilt, who took care to get Lori at
VOOM headquarters to sort out install problems over a year ago after I
posted our problems on this forum. Over the past several months it
has been Lori and Peter, VOOM's engineer, who have helped sort out
reception of OTAs particularly ch. 9-5. Of course, more recently he
has been involved in 7.33.

Although we are out $499 + tax as we purchased our equipment this is
small potatoes compared to the potential of losing your job.

So, guys and gals at VOOM good luck in whatever you end up doing!

P.S.: Better enjoy HBO while we have it as we are unlikely to sign up
for any other sat or cable service. Will miss Deadwood in March.

[VOOM] Re: After reading through all the posts here and satguys, those I feel sorry...

Wish I had only spent that, mine was $800. Also in case it was said
before, if an I do me if they decide to shut down the system, make
sure you unplug the coax first. I found out when I had a problem with
my receiver that if they deauthorize your box it will be locked on
whatever channel it was on and you can't change it as the remote
controls functions are limited. All I could get to work was the
system menus.

It would be nice to get some notice of any discontinuation of
service so we can do this. Since I purchased my unit as well ($399),
I would like to still be able to use it as an OTA receiver.

-k

------------------------

Just a quick note on the continued use of the recievers as OTA tuners

The recieevers need to recieve an authorization on a continual basis to contine working, usually every 2 weeks to a month or when you change your programming

This being said, if Voom dies, (and I am still hoping that ther old man pitches a fit and kills his kid and the board) then within 2 weeks to a month, the authorization on your reciever will expire, and the OTA portion will no longer function

Tim,
I am willing to admit that I just don't know at this point. I wish others
would do so too.
I hope you are right. I think some of these strong opinions that VOOM is
immediately dead come from the Sat guys forum. Frankly, if you go there and
check it out, you will see that they have sensationalist headlines like the
National Enquirer. I strongly disagree with that methodology. Unless they
can say with authority that they know a lot more than the rest of us via a
direct pipeline to the powers that be. This is one of the dangers of the
internet. Everyone gets to be a news reporter, but unlike the news media,
there is no accountability and no need for responsible reporting. Rumors
fly and individual opinions are repeated enough to become fact.
I will wait for the situation to develop, read whatever I can on the subject
( and there will be an abundance of reading material), and enjoy VOOM as
long as it's up there and is reasonably priced. If it ended tomorrow, it
still was perfect for someone like me who got a 50" DLP HDTV 7 mmonths ago.
It really has filled a void.
I'd like to think that the signups have increased lately based on the number
of VOOM forum applications I've processed. VOOM spent a lot of money
positioning themselves as the HDTV leader and advertised very well. IF I
bought the company I would not be so quick to throw all that out.
We'll see.

I still say Rainbow 1 is sold but Voom as a company is not sold. Voom
will lease the transponder space back from Dish as Sky Angel does from
Dish.

Very true...but until I hear something concrete as to the status of the
company, next months bill will remain on my desk...

D* is being installed today!

Cheers,

I for one will continue to pay my bill and watch VOOM until the
picture is gone. Then I will dust off my Samsung HD D* receiver and
get service back. Or even better awaiting an announcement from Dolan
Sr. saying the service will continue in some way. I hope to hear that
but wont hold my breath.
Charlie will never see a dime of my money once the VOOM programming
has been turned off. Us original Voomers will really miss the
service. I like my VOOM like I like my MAC.

Re: [VOOM] Re: After reading through all the posts here and satguys, those I feel sorry...

Jason,
I am under a different impression.
If you disconnect Rainbow 1 LNBF while you are authorized the OTA should
work indefinitely. By the way, I had a Direst TV Toshiba DST-3000 HDTV
receiver given to me by a friend after he switched to cable. When he
disconnected it the authorization was active. It is still very usable as an
OTA receiver without any further authorization. I believe the continual
authorization is only necessary for the "cable" type channels.
How do you know that it will not be the same situation for a VOOM receiver?
I hope you are wrong but if you have some information could you please share
the details. Many of us are counting on being left with an OTA HD receiver
of fairly good quality. Thanks.

David,
Do you pay by credit card? If so, and your service was prematurely and
suddely terminated, you could contact your credit card company and get a
refund because of non-delivery of services. Besides, how much could you
really lose worst case? A partial month?
