what are the differences in these remotes? rc65 and rc65x

The RC65 is the basic remote, the RC65X will program your equipment itself when you enter the model numbers.
 
Both are IR only. An "R" after the number would indicate RF. A "B" would indicate backlight buttons. "X" indicates programmed by receiver.

and the RC65X apparently will lose the codes when programmed by the HR34 receiver. (grin).

I've never had luck with the RC65X keeping the programming when I do a setup/remote control/setup TV, especially when I have to do the every couple of days reboot of the HR34 to fix the C31 black screen client problem. I know a HR34 roboot in theory shouldn't affect the RC65X TV programmed code, but I lose all TV punchthru functions when I do a HR34 reboot.

I have better luck and no problems when I program the remote myself for the TV with the five digit tv device codes found on directv.com.
