The only reason this made the news is because it has to do with a high profile player at a high profile college, Notre Dame. If it was a lesser known player at a lesser known college, it wouldn't of made news.

Please raise your hands if you've ever done anything dumb or fell for anything while you were 22 and expecting a millions of dollars payday in the near future. As more comes out, this wasn't just being dumb or falling for it, it appears he may have even known she didn't exist and kept the lie going for some time and this only came out when it did because Deadspin broke the story.
