Will DirecTV really ever be the leader

By their own admission, they are about 12 months behind. Why do you continue to insist that they are about 6 months behind?

Do the math: projected D11 launch (early 2008) - planned (early 2007) -> 12 months

It really doesn't matter how far they are behind if things progress "nominally". It will always be important to seek and relate the truth about where DIRECTV is at in their plan and to understand that it may not always be what DIRECTV claims.

SO WHO CARES?

Honestly, I don't get it.

My guess is d* will fill up that 150 HD capacity pretty quickly considering all of the RSN's etc, and dont forget the "other services" they often refer too. Then you will experience Mpeg4 artifacts. And given that is twice the amount of compression, Im sure the effect on the PQ will be more dramatic.

And how's Dish gonna do it with similar bandwidth and put all the SD AND HD in MPEG4 on the sats? Ahhh, but I forget, Charlie walks on water around here. :D

Come on, just give it up.

Hello, I've been waiting for 2 years for this roll out. Seems like it is all about to happen and I always thought that D* would always be the market leader. It just seemed that way with all their advertisement. Now I hear Dish is going to have HD capacity by the end of the year and get this, I'm on vacation in NY and Cablevision is advertising over 100 HD capacity by the end of the year. Who knew! Doesn't look like D* ever had an edge, they're rolling out with everyone else. Just a thought from a 10 year D* guy, never moved.

Peace,

Cablevision by the end of the year is actually supposed to have the capacity for over 500hd channels. I think Directv let everyone know their plans way to early and this let everyone prepare and build better systems because they knew exactly what DTV was up to and approximatly when it would be up. I think they would have done themselves a favor if they would have kept mum and then all of a sudden in June said by Sept we plan on having 100hd channels this would have caused the other provider to scramble and be in a major bind.

Not understainding why this type of question gets asked over and over again.

What makes a HD leader? Is it the most overall channels? Is it PQ? Is it quality of the channel itself?

This can truly be answered in so many ways, and it is - as you can read throughout these forums.

If it is based on most channels, DISH wilns (for now at least)

If it is based on PQ, FiOS wins (problemn is - not avaialable in most places)

If it is based on most sports offered, DirecTV wins (and future promises)

Get the one that fits YOUR needs.

The real question is - what is most important to YOU!

If your going by most overall channels its actually Cablevision they have 40, since they added voom the last week of June.

Funny - since they OWN VOOM, and obviously had the bandwidth - what took them so long? My guess - here on Long Island they must be losing ground to FiOS. Or is it that they felt they had to make a move now just as DirecTV was going to get the headlines? I would say BOTH.

Why didn't they add these OWNED channels 3 years ago? Oh - because as usual the Dolans don't do anything for their subs until they feel they are forced to.

Did they say UP too 500 or they would have 500 ???
It's all a play on words, it all depends on what you want to hear.

Have they listed thier 500 HD channels yet , seeing there are not even 100, (excluding locals) ....
This will be very difficult, lets see if they make it !

Let me tell you there is a major material difference in all of this. Most importantly, it is DirecTV that is driving ALL the competion right now. They are the ones that are announcing carriage agreements with the various providers - the others are all just in a defensive reaction mode right now.

Cablevision is the perfect example. Why NOW do they add VOOM? They OWN VOOM and have not had it on the system yet. They added it now, so there were NO BANDWIDTH issues we see. Can it be only coincidence to the happenings at DirrecTV? IMO highly unlikely.

Now that DIRECTV 10 is up - you are going to see all the scrambling to catch up from the competition - my question - why didn't they all just add this stuff 6 months ago? Obviously they could have.

Face the facts - it is DirecTV that is driving the HD initiative right now. For sure I predict it will certainly ger very interesting now.

Sco,
I hope your not trying to convince me of this, I already understand what your saying.
I expect most to come out and proclaim a large number just so thier subs think they are working on it .... I don't see them haveing anything near what they are proclaming.

Of course we still have our D* doubters that the channels will be up at all.

Now is a GREAT time to be a D* sub !!!

I agree that directtv is definately taking a proactive approach and announcing all of thier carriage aggrements so early usually you hear about a couple of days before a channel goes live on a provider. However has far as voom & cablevision for all I know it may have had something to do with when they sold the satellite to dish they also got 20% of the programming right so they(dish) may have had an exclusive on it for 18months or however long its been since the demise of voom dbs.

Indeed it is a great time to be a D* sub.

I think D* will lead in the near future because of D10's launch. Then E* will answer and Cable and so on. Back and forth it will rage.

Thats just what we want to happen.

D* offers what I WANT IN HD RIGHT NOW. So for me the HD leader for ME is D*.

Local channels are in HD
Local RSN's are in HD (NESNHD full time!)
NFL ST

thats what I watch so unless E* or Comcast can match that for ME D* beats them because they offer what I want.

Now I can respect people saying ugh sports or who cares about the NFL ST but thats their prerogative.

A little lesson for all of you in Sat land. Some people like different things. I like Chocolate Chip ice cream you may hate it, but for me Choco Chip rules. Who is right? We both can be Chocolate Chip ice cream can rule and suck at the same time.

Just like sat/cable providers. You may hate sports and thats ok. I love em. We both can be right. So why do we constantly bicker on who is the leader or which is better blah blah blah.

Its all opinion....and you know what they say about opinions.

this is the exact quote from the press release "Company Announces Capability To Carry More Than 500 HD Channels This Year"

I take this as they have they ability to carry 500hd channels but, dont have the contracts in place at this time, DTV is leading the way in this front. I hope when the time comes by the end of the year Cablevision will be able to keep pace in their negotions to add the HD channels and not just have all this capacity but with no additional channels.

So they did nothing more than D* did when D* said they have the "Capacity" to carry.

No difference ....

OK - I will be the first to state it.

DirecTV IS THE HD LEADER (IMO),

First - they are driving this entire thing.

Second they put their money where their mouth is.

Third, they have ALWAYS lead in HD sports.

Charlie. FiOs. Cable. They are already showing their concern. And I don;t blame them.

Too bad, game over.

I personally don't care WHO the leader is as long as they deliver the channels I want.

If they get my FSN Detroit to me in HD and add other channels such as SCI FI and the such, I'm happy.....
It could be 40-50 channels in all, if they are ones I watch thats great.
If they give is 500 HD channels and 475 I'm not interested in, what good is it.
It all depends on if they are giving the individual the channels they want to watch.

You all know I am big into SPORTS, so I feel D* has done a great job (with the exception of FSN Detroit) , while others that don't like sports, but would rather see movies, then they are not currently happy....

So there is no way EVERYONE will be entirely happy.

D* has been the Sports HD leader for quite some time now, but thats not the tag line they want to use, so, for another few months, E* will continue to be the HD leader as far as over all channel (s).

It's called 450 "channels" of VOD. :D

IMO. I think E* is the leader in HD programming.Your right Directv has the most in HD sports. If you like spending $350 on Baseball and another $350 on football you will have the most sports HD.So I guess if Directv customers have an extra $700 + a year hanging around your in good shape. But don't think your getting all that HD at no cost.
