These look kinda cool, but I have to wonder what the expected life of that hinge is.
But yeah, that functionality with a 1080p panel, price could have certainly come in higher.

I was fortunate enough to be able to download the developers copy of Windows 8 a few months back and from what I saw during that the 3 days I had it installed on a spare drive, I WOULDN'T HAVE WINDOWS 8 IT IF THEY GAVE ME A COPY!!
Metro desktop is the largest piece of s**t I've ever had the pleasure of using, even worse than Unity in Ubuntu 11 and up! At least with Ubuntu they give you an option of using Gnome 3. Not so with Metro as it's either like it or lump it! For those of you who thought Vista was bad? Vista was a Cadillac compared to Win 8!!
My prediction? It won't be 6 months and there will be some MAJOR revisions, one of which will be the addition of a standard desktop option allowing users to pick which they want!

The comparisons to Vista are short sighted and looking to just score a quick '+1' from the anti-MS mob. W8 runs fine (while Vista chugged), the forced inclusion of the new UI has certainly been an interesting debate. Having been on the release preview for the last couple months I won't be going back to 7.
I use all my normal desktop apps just fine, btw. No 'normal desktop version' needed, and if W8 mobile phones and tablets are successful the synergy and consistency will be appreciated.

You can go into desktop mode when you want to do so. You just do not have a start button any more, you have to search for any app, or have it be an icon on the desktop.
It really is not that bad in some ways.
The main problem I have with it is the training involved. I know a lot of people that barely know how to operate Win7, and having to teach them the new way of doing things in Win8 is going to be a pain.

FYI I do not and will not ever own a smart phone or a tablet PC. I don't even have a cell phone!! And I'm pretty sure that I'm not the only one. An OS written primarily for those devices can't possibly be good for the average desktop computer user.
Not looking to "score a quick '+1'" as you put it and I'm not what you call "the anti-MS mob"! I run a computer repair shop so so I'm not anti anything that I can make money working on. All I did is express my sentiments on what is an attempt by MS to shove something down the throats of their customers when it would be far easier and create far less drama if they would just allow the end users to choose between a conventional desktop and Metro! Hackers have already written a scrip that puts the standard desktop and start menu up and does away with Metro so it would pretty easy for MS to incorporate that into 8. Me, I'm not too fond of loading hacked software, which will probably have Gauwd only knows how many trojans in it on a new OS to correct what I perceive as a screw up by MS.
And BTW, this computer I'm on now is multi-boot with XP, XPx64, Vista, Win 7, Linux Mint 12 and Ubuntu 12.04 with the Mate desktop instead of Unity. It will not have Win 8 on it though until MS gives me a conventional desktop to work with.
And one final point for ya. What would you do if you went to a restaurant, ordered a steak then found out that the only way they would serve you one was WELL DONE, and you wanted it RARE??
Micro$oft is in for a bad row of stumps with Win 8 as I've done a bunch of searches and not found too many ppl that are happy about the Metro only desktop UI. I guess you're part of that minority.
I'm big on windows os and pcs but I am not a fan of windows 8 either and don't think I'll be upgrading my windows 7 which has been fantastic for me. I will however try to keep an open mind about it since I am a fan of change as long as it is for the better. Significantly better.....

Totally off topic, but do you mind if I ask, with all the tech that you do own, why you wont own a smart phone at all, or at the least, a cell phone?
Just the W8 Desktop puts me off ever using it. It is designed for a touchpad and that is not what I use on a regular basis.
Believe it or not but Android is Linux and iOS is Unix based derived from OS X (MAC desktop).
While Linux is not very mainstream on the desktop, it is of course big in the server world. OS X has about 15% of the US desktop/laptop market...

Whatever... the desktop I saw would not stay with the smaller icons. Everytime we restarted the computer the large icons came back. And the fisher-price start menu was the icing on the cake. If others like it fine. I just wish they would give us the OPTION to go to the regular desktop and keep it as well as a less childish looking start menu.
Yeah, it boots to start (which kind of makes sense since in theory the first thing you'll do when you start is... start a program). I infinitely prefer the desktop versions of apps thus far, so I just click the desktop button and I'm on my way.
Launching applications I like much more with W8. Hit start, start typing, done. Need to apply what I typed to a Chrome search, searching the Store, searching files or apps, etc, it's all just a click away. Similar to how I launch almost everything on a Mac. Even if it's in the dock sometimes it's still quicker to command-space and type the name
Anyways, glad I can upgrade this current box to the full retail once it's out rather than starting fresh once again. My first experience with an SSD and it's amazing, takes Windows all of 8 seconds or so to load once BIOS is done.
