I found this video on YouTube where somebody made a Satellite Dish out of an umbrella & foil.

I'm just wondering if something like this would actually work on both C & or Ku band with the right LNB.

I have detected KU band signals using a garbage can lid as a reflector. So anything is possible...

Would a regular umbrella with foil work as a reflector? Possibly, but expect to poorly perform for strong KU-band FSS signals. A better candidate for DBS/DSS (Dish or DirecTV) signals. A rain/shade umbrella is not a well shaped parabola, a misshapen, inefficient surface and likely quite lossy.

This is something similar to what I was thinking about, only using an aluminium fly screen (Similar to what's used in storm doors & windows.) rather than foil. (This article is from about 18 years ago.)

I would think you would need some sort of die to get the right shape as aluminum screening tends to be pretty springy.

I couldn't find it online so I bought a copy off eBay a while back. Doesn't have to be pristine condition, just readable.
