PowerVu receivers

well had some fun tonight and learned some things

1. since there is no card in it it wont authorize any powervu stuff. Just says "not authorized"
2. wont do HD (tried it...nada)
3. wont work with a diseqc in line. Hooked up the C-band dish to it that uses the 621-2 LNB and since there is a built in diseqc switch it wont acknowledge it...slave it and it works fine

Picture is really stable on 7/8 stuff (ie: Equity G3 stuff). Pansat stumbled with 75 quality but powervu kept trucking along

negative, nada, zippo

translation...nice black screen and thats it. Tried the NBC on AMC1 KU and channels logged but no pic or sound

try it during primetime just in case you were tuning a NBC feed that is black screened when there is not a feed or need for the channel at a given moment.

no it was during prime time. the Coolsat 5000 had just sound so I knew the feed was active :)

So final verdict is ?
No DVB-S2, no MPEG-4, no 4:2:2, no AC-3. Junk ! :D

for 10 bucks I cant go wrong. The box works and thats all that matters :)
plus the fact it can keep a stable feed on a 7/8 FEC that makes it better

what have we learned?

The pictures showing the insides, looked like older technology.
How many years old would you say these boxes are?

Also, at the beginning of this thread, I thought these receivers were commercial rack-mount.
But from all the photos, they appear to be stand-alone end-user units.
(except they are certainly not end-user friendly!)
Have they been sold to end-users, or are they more for commercial users?
I can't see anyone buying a bunch of 'em for a cable head end...

Based on what you've now learned, would it be worth going after a sister unit that does do 4:2:2 , HD, or have other desirable features?
If it operated like this one, I'm sure you'd have it running in no time. - :up

The model Ice has looks exactly like the model we had at work.

I wonder if all those 7+ year old receivers will turn up somewhere for cheap. I doubt they would redeploy them for use. Ours was used for inhouse training and that went internet, which must be more cost effective.

Around the year 2000-01, our Powervu was installed. Satellite was the way to go at the time. We still had dial up internet around here and that wasn't reliable. But with high speed internet VS. what satellite transponder leasing must cost, expect more of the receivers to go out of service.

these boxes (the d9234) is mainly designed for Armes Forces Network. All they need is one TP logged in for AFN (Goaliebob mentions above he has the same box)

this model maybe not. But the others yes

possibly. But these use remotes and the others don't. The keypad is right on the box. Also the programming is different for the other units (not a big issue..the other units use the IF frequency versus the frequency we all know)

there are a lot on Ebay right now (the D9234)

Any other Update ice?

Just wondering any other update? I was interested in the 4:2:2. Plus I still somebody crazy claiming 8psk on it.

Final verdict?

Thanks,

Josh

9224 definitely does 4:2:2. I'm not sure whether or not any of the others do. I believe 9222 is unusable for FTA. I don't think any of the 92xx series does HD.

Not all 9224's do 4:2:2(first version off the assembly)..you must pay attention to the options..Rev. 3 is what you would be interested in

D9222 are junk..The receive SA-Phase 1.5v...not Dvb compliant, proprietary services only...South America has some Phase 1.5 stuff around...
