That is according to ESPN rankings, Oregon State was ranked by AP when Utah beat them. And with Alabama, that makes 4....

I think he has a valid point. EVERYONE HERE fights for the NON Big Conferences in basketball, but not in football? There is no requirement to install an undefeated team as #1. Even a two loss team (LSU last year) could be #1. A case COULD be made for all of them to claim #1.

Let me say it even more strongly. There has been a lot of talk on this thread about the fact that USC is far better than any other Pac-10 team. And then the people saying that either say or imply that in the Big-12 or the SEC USC would just be one among many. Ridiculous! Starting with the third year of the Pete Carroll era USC has been, athletically speaking, far superior to every college team in every conference, with the exception of the Vince Young Texas team that beat them in the 2006 Rose Bowl. USC had previously destroyed a favored Oklahoma team. They have pummeled Ohio State more than once. They humbled Penn State this year. Their early-season non-conference schedule has been far stiffer than the leading Big-10, Big-12, and SEC non-conference schedules, and they have won them all.
The reason USC has not been the national champion for five out of the last six years is their mental and emotional immaturity. Carroll has no trouble getting them ready for bowl games or big early-season non-conference games. If USC were allowed to play either Oklahoma or Florida this year they would pulverize them. Their problem is, they have over-inflated egos. When playing against a clearly inferior opponent they sometimes don't bother to work at all. So they have suffered championship-killing losses to really bad Stanford, Oregon State, UCLA, and Notre Dame teams. For that reason, I am not saying USC deserves to be the national champion this year or any of the last few years when they didn't win it. I am saying that Texas, Oklahoma, and Florida should be very thankful they are not playing USC this year.
By the way, the Pac-10 is not as weak overall as people think, as was demonstrated by its 5-0 bowl record this year. Oregon beating Oklahoma State and Utah stomping Alabama should serve as wake up calls to the Big-12 and the SEC. They are benefiting from past greatness just like the Big-10 did for several years. (Yes, I know Utah is not in the Pac-10.)

Now I do agree that just because you go undefeated, does not make you the best football team. But in this case, the fact they beat 4 ranked teams AND the team that was ranked #1 in the country for almost 7 weeks...and beat them SOUNDLY...AT HOME...regardless of whether they "quit", "didn't show up" or had "nothing to play for"
