iphone vs winmo

nice don, and I have to say one thing about mac, they do have a cult following that is for sure, but so does blackberry, and even winmo.
This is one reason why I was against getting the iPhone. I am a PC person, have used MACs and I cannot stand them. The cult following turns me off even more. After going back and forth between the Fuze and the iPhone I have decided on the iPhone for my own reasons, not because it is trendy.

I'm not obsessed with my WinMo phone...hey it's a phone!... not my life... But I do love the phone. It does everything I need. My first WinMo phone the HTC 6800/Mogul. It was nice some ways but the internal memory was very lacking and would run out of memory. After upgrading to the 6850 Touch Pro...wow... tons of memory to leave all kinds of apps open at one time. The way WinMo was supposed to be. Love having the two browsers so I can choose between pocket IE pages and full screen pages.

I've played with the iPhone and it is cute and has a good bit of eye candy but I couldn't live with the hardware/software limitations of the phone and most of all I couldn't deal with AT&T's network. I'm more about productivity and getting stuff done and that's what Windows Mobile offers.

I have a Motorola q9h with WinMo 6.1 and I love it.

I sure hope the q9h is better than the crappy q9c that I had. That phone was the worst phone I have ever had. Heck if somebody wants it, I will sell it to them real cheap.

To all the people who praise the iPhone, I say, "Remove the App Store and all your Apps. Is it STILL that great of a phone?"

It is an OK phone but you could say the same thing about your great q9h. Remove all the apps from it and how is it? A phone is a phone without any of the apps and that is all. They are all pretty much the same.

On my win Mobile, I can open an mp3 file podcast, be listening to it via BT headset in stereo, then while listening either surf the web or play a game. When a phone call comes in the phone mutes the mp3 file while I take the call. When done the call is finished and the mp3 file picks up from pause so I can continue to listen. Then I may decide to launch my stock reports to check my portfolio. The weather monitor is updating radar on storms watch and then I can launch my aggregator to download more podcasts.

You are aware that the iPhone also does all of this?

I have played with WinMo phones and even owned one. The only one that I might give a shot to is the HTC Touch Pro. All the others just don't compare to any of the newer technologies.

As far as AT&T's network, it really all depends on your area. I could not live with Verizon's network that is the only reason I am now with AT&T. AT&T runs circles around Verizon around here.

You said it the best, it is only a phone. Pick the one that gives you the features you want and move on from there.

Just wait..... Over the next few years we will be talking about all the pro soles that still use these old pieces of technology.

So Sprint is $3.25 per month cheaper. This is no real big news or difference. Personally I don't pay the fee to do this but that is just a personal choice.

I don't pay it either but for lazy folks that don't want to install a simple app you'll have to pay... but it will track just about any phone so you'd have to use the pay service on a old school flip phone.

I use the free route that will let you track it from another Smartphone.

i really want to try an android or linux phone someday, i have heard so little i think they are snaking in under the radar

Don't waste your time on the android. It really has a long way to go before it becomes worth anything. I have a friend that has one and it does not even come close to the iPhone or Windows Mobile devices IMO.

Pretty cool video of the PointUI interface on the TP...they show a bit of the WM6.5 Titanium interface. Lots of interfaces to choose from SPB MobileShell, TF3D, TF3D2, Titanium, PointUI, etc.

Since this thread is a debate- you have to be more specific, jag...

On the latest iphone 3.0 GS version iphone does now support A2DP stereo audio. Prior versions of iphone were only BT1.1 version and that did not support BT2.0 and therefore no stereo BT connection. :)

To be fair, even my XV6800 win Mobile was not capable of stereo BT until I upgraded the last version of wM 6.1 which added EVDO REV A and BT stereo 2.0 ( A2DP protocol)

While the 3.0GS is capable of many new and exciting catch up updates, one thing it has been widely reported a problem is that when using BT for stereo mode, the RF signal drops out and prevents any internet activity with stereo BT. Thus no live streaming audio via BT. I think this is just a software bug and Apple will likely get it fixed shortly. Unfortunately, any wifi gaming must be done via wired headsets until a fix is completed.

I haven't looked closely at the 3.0 G S yet but does this now multitask?

digiblur- As you had the 6800, you should know... How many applications can you load up and have running stuff simultaneously? new vs. older Mogul. My limit on the 6800 is about 4-5. But if I load voice command( a real memory hog) and use that to launch applications, I only can load 3 before I get the low memory.

BTW- I mostly use Opera because it supports java script, Flash and most banking web pages plus tabs for different pages. PIE is really limited and slow. Opera is my default PDA browser

Really. It does not have to be the GS version of the iPhone to support BT stereo audio. I only have the 3G and am loving the use of it. It is only the 1st generation models that do not support it.

I have yet had a problem using slacker radio and my BT headset.

True multitasking no but you can use some apps at the same time. I listen to music and browse the internet all of the time. I can even use the phone and browse the internet. Can I use slacker radio and browse the internet or do other things, NO but there are apps that can be used at the same time.

Don,

On the Touch Pro you can open up as many as you want really... And I run a larger 32mb pagepool on my ROM for faster speed. I just opened up like 15 apps, hell it was making me scroll on the HTC task manager...never did that before... and I still had like 70 meg of RAM free. This was all with Voice Command loaded and the memory heavy TouchFlo interface.

Only downside to things in the Verizon camp, Verizon gimped their Touch Pro. They barely have enough memory and the keyboard is missing some keys. Kinda like the 6800 all over again. I was constantly having to reclaim RAM on that thing with only 18-20 meg available after boot. I easily have 115 meg of RAM after loading everything I need. People hate the Verizon Touch Pro so bad I've seen many people convert the Sprint or Alltel one over to Verizon.

Poor Don - he has Apple fanboys in the family. :)

Good post.

LOL! You should see us get together. I bring my Macbook over with Final Cut on it and daughter's motherinlaw tries to show me stuff on it. Then I ask why would I ever want to do it that way. It's so slow. So she asks well how would you do it? I jump to parallels and switch to win XP, open up Vegas and wham! project done. :D

What makes Apple a cult is that all mac heads worship it's leader, Steve Jobs.

Those other devices, like Blackberry certainly have their fanboys but do any of them worship a movement leader? It's not a cult. An obsession maybe but not a cult. The closest we see to a cult outside the Apple world is a few of the PC Geeks have a thing for Bill Gates but that is a very small minority of PC users.

Here we go. For Phone, I love WinMo. I had a PPC-6700 (clunky), and then went to a Samsung Instinct. (mistake). Finally got Sprint to swap me to a Touch Pro and love it. LOTS of memory, lots of options.

Now, for a laptop, I like the MacBook Pro I have from the office. Reason: Connects to ANYTHING ANYWHERE.

And I also have an iPOD Touch, and like it, but don't think the iPhone is worth the grief and ATT T&C's.

The Sprint plan I'm on is 1500 minutes (M-F 7a-7p) shared on 3 phones. Everything else is unlimited.

can't beat it.

Well said Don... I have to laugh everytime I see the Apple commercials touting all the wonderful "apps" that have been free on Windows Mobile for years.

The iPhone OS is a much slicker interface, but has many limits for a power user. Microsoft is so far behind in that area, but slowly catching up. Luckily companies like HTC have taken into their own hands to put a slick interface on top of WM.

I am a recent convert to Winmo after a long time with Palm. I have to say, I love this phone.
It took a little getting used to, but I don't think I could get through the day anymore without the ability to turn my phone into a wireless router using the 3G internet, I love the Google Maps with Latitude, and... I can watch hulu on it...
My girlfriend has an iphone and loves it, and thats great, but she doesn't do any work on it... makes calls, plays a few games....it is great at that.

That's it in a nutshell. I picked the iPhone because it was the right phone for the things that I want to do. I'm still using the original version of the phone but I will probably upgrade the the 3G S later this year.
