An Open Letter to Jim Tressel

I don't think he will EVER "open it up"...The Vest version of "opening it up" is a couple of wrinkles here and there.....;)

It's not that simple. It seems like Tressel goes into the game with plans to open it up, and does in fact open up with some early plays to take advantage of the team's strengths, and to throw off the defense.

But as the game goes on and the pressure mounts, Tressel falls into his pattern of doing what is safe, especially in a close game. I get the feeling he has 'opening it up' plays in his arsenal, but throws them out the window in the second half.

He did just that against USC. On OSU's first possession, Pyror started in shotgun. I think he then passed on 1st down... That's very unlike OSU... He also made USC think "he's gonna run".

Also, how many times did OSU go for it on 4th and short ? More than once I recall 4th and 1 and they boot the ball away. How many times did USC do it ? How many times were they successful ?

That stat right there was part of my postgame analysis....

USC was 3 for 4 in 4th down conversions. Two of the three times USC converted on 4th downs resulted in 14 points!

Salt meet Wound

Not to add more salt to the wounds, but do you guys remember that 4th and 1 play where USC scored their 1st TD? Well, this screen cap is evidence that the Trojan RB never even got in the endzone! I realize it's over and done with and this isn't sour grapes. Just wanted to share this interesting photo with the rest of you. Makes you think what could've been if this ball was overturned and USC never scored 7. Hmmmm......

Well it's obvious backed up to his own one foot line, Tressel would have come up with some razzle dazzle to get us down the field quickly...

What am I saying?

You know, I don't want to hurt myself patting myself on the back or anything, but a year ago after the 35-3 loss I came here and said how disgusted I was with Tressel's play calling, and the use of the two QB's he had at the time. And people jumped right down my throat, asking me if I wanted John Cooper back, why I was ungrateful for all the victories over Michigan and all the top ten rankings, etc.

Well it only took a year for you guys to catch up to a girl, but at least I have company on this side of the fence now! :D

Even my criticism of The Vest and the start of this thread BEFORE this USC game was not accepted by all. After the game, a lot more critical voices jumped on our side.

On the other hand ..... how many times did the USC O start inside thier own 20 with the OSU palying very well getting 3 and outs ?
Field position is also a key to the game ....

The Bucks Offense was just plain BAD when they got the ball at thier 35 or better most of the night.

So, do you want Cooper back ?

Copper did NOTHING, other than recruit.
Couldn't win a game when it was needed, not even "The Game"

Your giving Carrol credit for going for it on 4th down, but failing to realize that if your TRAILING you would have a tenancy to do that.
Wait for OSU to be trailing in a game and have a 4th and short. Tressel will still punt the ball away... Watch.

Depends where they are, he seems to like his D this year, which I do too.
Another thing to think about is, Can they get a yard or two when they need to ?
They have no staple plays that work all the time, they have NO IDENTITY on offense yet this year.

After watching Pryor today, I have to say im leaning more and more toward the coach being OSUS problem. Pryor was showing great skill today,.
They all seem to look like Heisman candidates against no competition. That's how they rack up the stats in highschool in the first place. It's what they do against the big boys that count. ;)
