Tony Dungy doesn't want Rex Ryan to say Naughty Words

On the Dan Patrick Radio show, the former Colts coach Tony Dungy said he wouldn’t hire a coach like Rex Ryan if given the chance because of his frequent use of profanity. Dungy said he had not seen the first episode of HBO’s “Hard Knocks” but had heard reports on it, and he said Commissioner Roger Goodell should do something about it.

So, to be clear: being around Michael Vick: cool. Being around Rex Ryan: not cool?

Seriously Tony?

Mike Francesa also went on and on and on about this, preaching how he would not want a coach of his football team talking like that. Really? Francesa used to be good friends with Bill Parcells, you think he didn't lay two or three...thousand (million?)...F-bombs in training camp? Does anybody think Vince Lombardi didn't curse either?

Francesa is also the same guy who the very next day after Lawrence Taylor was accused of statutory rape of a minor, invited Taylor's lawyer onto his show so the lawyer could tell us all what a misunderstanding it was, that the truth will come out shortly and Lawrence Taylor would be vindicated. Even with Taylor's long history of questionable off-field decisions.

Taylor was indicted last week.

Like so many things, this breaks down along party lines. Francesa is a Giant fan, so with Taylor the point was to wait and see what happens...and with Ryan, anything he does is evil. If a Giant coach were throwing F-bombs around Francesa would say 'this is the NFL, you think nobody curses?' If a Jet were accused of raping a minor, trust me, Francesa would NOT give the player's lawyer a forum to declare his client's innocence. ;)

This is the NFL, not the Girl Scouts for chrissakes! Tony looks out of touch.

He coached that way....and he won a Super Bowl. I am under assumption that maybe he is a firm believer of that you can coach a team to win WITHOUT profanity and screaming in your face approach. I am sure there have been a few coaches like.

Tony Dungy wouldn't hire a coach who swears, but he would hire a quarterback who tortures and electrocutes dogs.

To quote one of the players during the episode "he talks like us".

Dungy being a little holier than thou IMO.

Somewhat related, I was really disappointed by HBO when they required me to sign up for an account to watch 'TV-MA content' and then Rex and the players are censored in their online version of the show...

Awe gee shucks. You really think so gosh darn-it? ;)

I'm saying there is no possible way you can prove that cursing or not cursing was the reason.

It has NOTHING to do with cursing and everything to do with his approach. Dungy is, for lack of a better phrase, the quiet/silent leader. He does not need to swear, scream, grab your face mask and threaten to eat your young to make his point. He has proven that it is not needed to win. But I am not gonna say that you can't win with Ryan's approach. Like I said, there is no "wrong way".

That's what I just said. Why are you arguing?

I agree with you ...and I agree with Tony. Tony Has HIS style and Ryan has his. No one is really wrong in this case.

Saying each has his own coaching style and nobody is wrong is fine.

But Dungy IS wrong when he advocates getting Goodell involved because he doesn't like Rex Ryan's coaching style. It's no longer 'live and let live', it's Dungy trying to grab the moral high ground and impart his style on Ryan.

THAT'S wrong. Just stay out of it, Tony. Rex Ryan is not saying YOU have to curse, Tony. Don't tell Rex Ryan how to run his team.

That is not wrong....that is HIS opinion.

Look, let's give Goodell the benefit of the doubt. He is smart enough to know that some styles work and some don't, plain and simple. YOU are just upset because they are talking about YOUR team....just like I would be upset, just like HD would be upset.

Right now, there are a few high profile players not starting the season because of some behavior, substance involvement and up and coming POSSIBLE lockout for next season.....worrying about whether someone swears, not swears, comes back, not come back is the very least of his worries.;)

This is completely untrue and everyone here knows it. I have come down MUCH harder on A-Rod, Glen Sather, the Knicks, Terrelle Pryor, Jim Tressel, St. John's basketball, etc., than anyone on this forum.

I was also the FIRST one last year to criticize Rex Ryan here, not for something as superflous as cursing in the NFL, but for some bad clock management and for talking the talk before his team walked the walk.

I do agree there are people here who look at what uniform a guy is wearing and then decide how they want to comment on something, but I'm not one of them. I'm not afraid to criticize or compliment my favorite players or teams.

Bottom line is, Dungy should mind his own business. Claiming the moral high ground makes him look disingenous at the very least. Dungy clearly lives in a glass house and should NOT throw stones.

Nobody is saying Dungy has to curse. He SHOULD NOT be telling another coach how to run his football team, and he SHOULD NOT be asking Roger Goodell to get involved in something even you agree is ridiculous.

Bottom line is this:

I agree with: Tony being allowed to use any coaching style he wishes. Whether he cusses like a drunken sailor or has the cleanest mouth this side of the Vatican is none of my concern.

I don't agree with: Tony pushing for the league's Commissioner to crack down against coaches with foul language. To me, that's like a Vegan pushing their ways on a meat eater. In the end, it's a personal choice, so let it be.
