After many years of being a DISH customer I decided to make a switch. I have been really satisfied with DISH and I really like their receivers, but when the issues with ESPN Classic, ESPNU (No HD), etc... continued to pop up it was just too much.

My impressions with DirecTv so far haven't been good ones. The first installer showed up and he was plenty nice and seemed knowledgeable, but he left without installing anything. He said my install was a "tricky one" and he needed his QC guy to approve it. He also showed up over 2 1/2 hours late.

The QC guy shows up only to tell me that there is isn't anything tricky about my installation and he can't figure out why the guy didn't install the service. He said it was really an easy installation and had no issues. So my installation gets rescheduled.

The QC guy went over the order with me while he was there and he asked me why I didn't want the DECA (Internet) option since my DISH was hooked up that way. I told him I did and I had asked for it in the original order. He told me to call back and make sure they included it. So I called back the next day and reached the most clueless person I have talked to in a while. I explained to her about 10 times what I was needing (DECA) and she was lost. Finally she said she understood and she would include it on my order, but I am betting it doesn't get included.

I opted for the 12:00 - 4:00 installation window about 5 days later, since it was the only one I could get without waiting several more days. So I took off of work to meet the installer. At about 5:35 DirecTv calls me and asks if I have heard from my installer. I had not. After several calls back and forth I am informed that they won't be showing up that day. When asked if they could come the next day and my response was no because I would be out of town, the phone rep. seemed upset. At which point I had to inform her that I am no longer changing my plans for them... If they want to install after 5:30 in the evening M-F, then feel free. Otherwise they can forget it. She told me they would be at my home after 5:30 today. I got an email stating the appointment was 4:00 or after, so we will see what time they show up (if they do show up).

Sorry to hear you had a bad first impression while I cant force installers to be on time I be more then happy to help you in any other way.

Thank you SC. Hopefully today will be better and I will finally get everything installed. I will keep you updated.

Installers can suck with Dish, Directv, Cable, DSL, etc...

The Directv video service, and the customer service Ive experienced lately, has been good.

Unfortunately this isn't the first time i read something like this as of late. hope its not becoming a habit

I think it less depends on the company as a whole, and more the group in your area.

I would agree, not only that but also indivudals as well at the same company. I have had some guys do a great clean job and some from the same company have things look like a tornado. I have been lucky as of late though the Tech that really does a nice job lives in my area so he usually gets sent over to me since its close to his house.

Hopefully your install goes better!

Hey Crimson, though I wish you all the pain in the world in your install (this is coming from a very discouraged Penn State fan so I may be just a bit off center right now:rant:) I can tell you this...I long ago learned that I had to separate Directv the company and their customer service from whoever the outfit is that ends up being my local installer. I have found that dealing with the company itself has always in my 15+ years with D* been what I would consider very reliable. The installers though, I figure that it is a toss of the coin. Had a guy out the other day because of a strange problem, great guy, kind of knew what he was doing, wanted to prove himself so he basically started from scratch and re did everything. Not sure he needed to though. So anywho, get past this and I am certain that you will be enjoying your D* at least until you guys come up to Happy Valley next year where if we somehow get twice as strong and twice as fast we can exact some revenge. Good luck the rest of the way with D* and Bama football, I for one am convinced that they will go wire to wire this year.

If Directv would take these install issues more seriously , the complaints would go down . Installer said it was " tricky " ? QC says it is not at all . Installer needs a reprimand or needs to be fired . If none of the above , Directv should drop them and try to find someone else . There is no reason for this to have happened . In all fairness though , the QC guy might be wrong . But someone was wrong and they need to be controlled . When I was scheduled for an install , I was afraid of this type of thing . But , as it happened , my install went flawlessly and on time . Even did a pole mount as I know better than to have a dish on my roof . He charged me nothing . If I ever have an issue where I need a service call , I hope I get him . Even sent a long email to the CEO letting him know the guy's ID # and name . Of course , I never heard anything back . I feel if something is done good , it should be told . The same for doing a bad job . I hope your issue gets straightened out soon . And I hope those same clowns are not the ones coming back !!:cool:

A little off topic but , I have to say it . Penn State gets over rated each year because of the name and what they used to do . I am NOT going off on them as it is not their fault . I like Florida teams alot . Florida is going to be over rated at the start of each season now because of what they used to do . Miami is the same way . These schools have poor football teams this year . Florida actually has the talent but , they have shown they cannot play well because their " old " leader is gone . Florida has an easy schedule so they should finish top 20 this year . Miami ? They have a lot of easy games but , I will be surprised if they can finish that high . Virginia Tech too . And Virginia Tech , when they had a great season , they never played any team worth mentioning . They started this season in the top 10 or maybe 13th , not sure . James Madison knocked them off . Just love your team and expect what YOU expect and not the rankings at the start of the year . Before my : game " with Directv , I really thought they were going to blow it because of all the complaints ( rankings ) I read about installation issues . In the end , they were winners for me . Ok . Hit me hard FlyingJ ! I expect it . Just please know I meant no offence at all . Just an observation like the ones that vote on rankings .

FlyingJ:
Hey I was at the game and I know it didn't turn out the way you would like, but I couldn't have been more impressed with the Penn State fans, trainers and coaches. I was lucky enough to make my way into the Penn State locker room before the game and hang out near the team before the game. It was a very cool experience and the Penn State players had me a little worried because they were huge. Looked very similar to our guys. It is great when these two teams get together regardless of the results. I can't wait to visit Happy Valley next year!!

Now back on topic... the reason I am giving them another chance is because I know how the system works. I know I need to separate the installers from D*, so I am waiting patiently. I had a call from today's installer and it is not the same one as before. This guy sounds like he is on top of things. He did say that the DECA was still not showing on the order, but that is no surprise and not a big deal. I will update how things go with the install.

Good luck on the rest of the season. I think that QB is going to be something special with a little more experience under his belt.

Sad to see your install didn't work out as originally planned, but hopefully this next installer does things right. Welcome to the dark side :D

There are a number of things going one.

High churn in installers

High demand for hd equipment and a shortage of equipment

High amount of customers thinking that free professional installation ment anything she wanted the tech to do he would do for free.

UPDATE:

Different installer came last night and got everything going. This guy was clearly a sub (personal vehicle, wearing shorts and a sleeveless t-shirt, smoking like a freight train), but he got the job done.

DECA was still not included, but I knew that would be the case. They are supposed to ship it to me.

The one thing that worries me is this guy refused to install the dish in the manner the QC guy wanted. It is TOTALLY different than what the QC asked for. I told him I don't care as long as it is done right and he said " he knew how to install equipment better than any QC". So I am curious what D* does in a situation like that? If the QC doesn't like it, will they have to fix it to his liking?

Just wondering....did you guys review signal strength before he left and you signed off on the job?

He never showed me signal strength.

I did sign, probably shouldn't have without doing some more investigation... but it was 9:45 PM. My 6 year old really needed to get to sleep and she couldn't with him there and it was too dark to even inspect the work he did. I hope I don't have any surprises when I get home and can see everything in the daylight.

It depends on the type of quality control (QC) you are talking about.

The good type of QC examines the installation and verifies that all items are installed correctly and that the total system has a good chance of giving dependable service. They also monitor the performance of the installer for both the technical details and customer relationships. Someone will have to bring the installation up to a reasonable standard.

The other type of QC is fraud being perpetrated by the installation company. These QC techs are part of a team that works to avoid paying the installer for the installation. When you combine an unrealistic work load with dispersed routing and equipment shortages it is not hard top find details in the installation that are not technically correct. This produces a justification for withholding some or all of the money from the installer.

Even after the installation is complete they have ways of deducting compensation.

Directv has been too far removed from the installation process to know or care. If you pay your first and subsequent bills you are a happy customer. And you don't care either. You got a FREE installation and the tech is gone.

I have seen good installs and bad ones....even funny ones...but don't recall "tricky" installations.

Joe
