Hopefully he can get some more of the classic shows. I like RTV, but the programming is not what it used to be.
We actually talked about this yesterday. Some of the programming remove would have required them to scramble their signal. He does not want to scramble the signal so he dropped those shows.

What old tv shows would require encryption? or are we talking about adding some cable fair?

It does seem odd that as long as you are legally licensed and payign the fee for old shows that a programmer like RTV isn't free to decide if they want to be FTA or encrypted in their distribution feeds. I suppose some programming licensor might have added the encryption terms to their licensing contract if it's shows that are also found on TVLand or Nick-at-nite and brings up the point why would anyone get a pay TV package with those channels and watch those shows when they could see it for free on RTV.

Probably has more to do with what area the programming is delivered to.
FTA is nationwide.
And potentially to Canada, too.
That could be a problem, even though the viewership will be tiny, compared to Dish/Direct/cable viewing of the same fare.

It would make a lot more sense for the owners of the local affiliates to push for encryption. The local affiliates have the motivation of wanting folks in their area to be required to see the local ads that they sell.

But why would the copyright holders of individual shows care? Their content is being distributed without encryption anyway (via OTA). Maybe someone should remind them that people don't have to pay to watch OTA television. So there's not an extra cut for them based on viewership.

Something about that just doesn't make sense.

Cheers

So is this a hint that Mr. Luken is going to be part of FreeDBS and that all these things we heard about FreeDBS were true? Hmm, they have it stated as 17 months away? Could this be a new satellite launch just for FTA or a satellite that they plan on using FTA on that will be launched at that time?

I have been wondering for awhile why one of the big guys (not DN etc) don't load up a Ku bird so all FTA'ers could get it without a big dish. I think a lot of people would pay a small fee for this and equipment cost would be minimal...no motor etc. A S9 and 30" dish with a hot LNBF and 50 channels!

I mean if Mr. Luken took all his channels and a couple buddies joined him for a small fee they could do this.

But lets go for the FREE! Scott said "ablaze", on fire!

We, with all our problems have it pretty good now.

Thanks Mr. Luken for RTV.

Many years ago the first thing I aimed for were the RTN affiliates on satellite G10 with my first DVB-S receiver and enjoyed for years since. My all time favorites like "Adam 12" and "Emergency" brought back so many fond memories. We really appreciate it.
