Heard the hr54 will be able to do 4K without the client. All it needs is a firmware update. Has anyone else heard this or know if it's true?

Nope, you are the first to state this.. IMHO, that would just make to much sense..

Did you read this? have a link? Been told by someone from Direct?

I'm getting an hr54 installed Friday. Been doing a lot of research on it for 4K. I saw it in a couple of forums, I think DBS and a Google search, but wasn't sure if they were right.

No, it does not have the hardware to do this. Not a firmware issue.

it would have to have a hdmi port capable of hdmi 2.0 (2.0a preferred) and hdcp 2.2

if it had this then maybe, but doubtful

directv dropped the ball on this if they were preparing for 4k

The following Chart was sent to me by DIRECTV. In order to see 4K besides needed a HR-54 is a 4K Compatible TV with built in 4K client, or a C61K.

Hope this helps end the confusion. :)

scott, can we share this other places?

also, is it official that the reverse band lnb is required as per the chart?

My question too about the reverse band LNB. When will it become a requirement, it certainly does not seem to be at the moment, all 4K seems to be coming from regular transponders

April 7th it will be required. This is correct no ch104 without reverse AND hr54.

That would mean that people who need 5LNB would not be able to get 4K (except you?), unless there's an immediate flood of 5LNB reverse band....

So channel 104 is moving to Reverse Band on April 7th?

What about channels 105 and 106?

Are they moving to Reverse Band as well by April 7th?

If you know that is of course ...

It would seem so. Documentation says that 104 is the 4k live channel, there are several others on 99cr too but that's the one that's online now. What I know for sure is any work order built or modified on or after apr7th that involves 4ktrue will trip a flag that sets rev3req=true. It has already tripped the hr54 flag. So anyone that has 4k on their account and needs their hmc replaced is garenteed a hr54. No other receiver will let the line item close any longer.

Ok thanks ...

Sure wish there was also a flag for a "rev5=true" as well, so I'd know for sure to expect the 5D2RB to start showing up by sellers on ebay ...lol

I would think all that means is that the reverse band LNB will get installed, not that it is actually needed immediately. Difficult to say...
And we still have the 5lnb issue....

I am told the following is or has gone out to DIRECTV techs today... I am just passing it along.

Following a successful pilot, we are excited to announce that the Digital Reverse Band 3 LNB will be available to use nationally as of April 7.

Effective April 7, some work orders will systemically require the installation of the Digital Reverse Band 3 LNB when there are 4K assets on the work order. While the Digital Reverse Band 3 LNB won’t be a technical requirement to deliver the 4K channels being launched in April since they are initially being delivered via Ka-Band, it is going to play a pivotal role in the company’s future 4K plans; as such, we are proactively future-proofing customers with this equipment. The introduction of the work order requirement to install Digital Reverse Band 3 on 4K work orders now ensures that customers will be able to continue enjoying 4K channels without a future LNB swap.

In cases where customers receive programming from the 119 orbital slot, the work order will not contain a Reverse Band LNB OLI until the introduction of the Digital Reverse Band 5 LNB. Additionally, the work order will not contain a Reverse Band OLI when customers have more than 13 tuners in their home. However, in both of these scenarios, those customers will still be authorized for broadcast 4K content, which should be confirmed before leaving the home.

With the launch of broadcast 4K, this is the first time we have required a specific Genie server, 4K client, LNB and programming package to enjoy content. That means it is more critical than ever that field personnel closely follow the requirements specified in a work order. To enjoy all 4K channels, a customer will need to have the following unique combination of hardware and programming:

  • HR54 (required to pass broadcast 4K content through to a 4K client)
  • C61K or DIRECTV 4K Ready TV (required to view any 4K content)
  • Digital Reverse Band 3 LNB (although not a technical requirement at this time, this will be required in the future, thus important to install with 4K orders now)
  • “ULTIMATE”, “PREMIER” or “Lo Maximo” programming package
We appreciate our field teams’ attention to following the procedures necessary to deliver the correct hardware setup to our customers.

When to Use Digital Reverse Band 3 LNB

Since this hardware will be needed for the future delivery of broadcast 4K content, the Digital Reverse Band 3 LNB should only be used when the work order dictates it, or per the Service rules defined below.

Technicians should now check the Product information and Capability field found in the LNB OLI for every job except Service, much like the work order-driven requirements to install HR54s that were implemented on February 18, 2016. If the Product is Reverse Band 3 or the Capability field reads “RBAND3:true”, the system will only allow a Digital Reverse Band 3 LNB to be installed in order to successfully close the OLI, and an error message will appear if a different LNB is installed.

Service calls will not have the Capability field indicator for Digital Reverse Band 3, so technicians will need to keep in mind that the system enforces like-for-like LNB swaps. If a customer already has a Digital Reverse Band 3 LNB, only a Digital Reverse Band 3 can be installed in its place.

The physical installation procedure for the Digital Reverse Band 3 LNB is exactly the same as all other SWiM LNBs, so there should not be any change in technician workflow. Technicians should take note of the physical shape and features of the Digital Reverse Band 3 to ensure they are selecting the appropriate LNB to install, and if in doubt, the model number should start with 3D2RB.

Field personnel should keep the following details in mind:

  • OLI and Capability Field: Before pulling an LNB off the truck, check the LNB OLI – Product line: “DIGITAL SWM LNB”; Product name “REVERSE BAND 3” – or the Capability field to understand which LNB will be required for a job.
  • Service: Service swap rules for Reverse Band are like-for-like, but the Capability field won’t be available to deliver that information.
  • Serial Number Scanning Information: Technicians can scan the serial number of a Digital Reverse Band 3 LNB using their handhelds and the Product line on the OLI will automatically populate. Additional information and screen shots are provided in our Digital Reverse Band 3 job aid.
  • AIM Firmware and IV Database Update: Technicians should ensure that their AIM is updated to support Digital Reverse Band 3. AIMs should be loaded with at least firmware v4.0 and IV database v0041. These updates were originally released to the field in January 2016, can be found by selecting this link and are designed to work on AIM 1.0 and 1.5.
  • Tuner Count: At launch, the Digital Reverse Band 3 LNB operationally supports up to 13 tuners in a SWiM system.
