Kindle e-reader owner's thread

My gut says that the latter issue is just not something well suited for an e-ink reader.

I suspect USB-C will come on the next one or so. But so far Amazon has not switched any of its devices to USB-C.

Bought a Fire HD 10 tablet at the end of April when they had a one-day sale for $99. Upgraded to 64 GB storage and went ad free so total cost was $155. The thing is pretty nice for what it cost, but after two days I had enough of being locked into the Amazon ecosystem, so I installed the Google Play Framework and Services. Now I can use real Android tablet apps, although I was shocked to see Spectrum, MS Outlook and Sirius XM all available natively on Fire OS, but I replaced them with the ones from Google Play.

It appears the Fire tablet can’t handle wifi speeds significantly more than 30 Mbps. At home I have a 140 Mb internet connection and on both 2.4 and 5 Ghz, the Speedtest.net app never broke more than 32 or 33 Mb down. Same goes for earlier in the month when I was in NYC using my cellular hot sports from both T-Mobile and Sprint. I was wondering because it seems to take longer to install apps and such then my phones and other Android devices I’ve had.

Using it as an e-reader in a brighter environment is a terrible idea. Like with all of these screens, it’s nothing but a highly reflective washed out mess. Video quality is great, and audio quality using the built in speakers top notch as well. I haven’t paired it to anything Bluetooth yet, but I’m happy to say I can now pair my Pixel Buds to the Kindle Oasis and use the gestures to change the volume and pause/play Audible on the Oasis.

Not sure how long I’ll use the Fire for, or if it will join the rest of my tablets finding it stuffed in a drawer or under a bed after it not being used for months. There is a bit of a lag, which is expected for a tablet in this price range, but its not a bad toy for the cost.

I've never found the Fires to be ideal for its original purpose - reading - thus, haven't used them in a long time.

I turned m old Voyager over to my wife, and she abandoned the Fire 8 she had. I'm so happy with the Oasis 2017. Such a great e-reader. And no distractions from other apps. :)

Did anyone upgrade to the latest Oasis? I didn’t bother this time, it felt like the changes didn’t justify the price. I still find the Oasis 2nd gen to be a stellar device for its singular purpose of reading (audible is on my phone). But they have continually updated their lower price ones, it is unclear how the premium kindles will retain added value.

I'm still using my paper white (non waterproof) model but I have my eye on the Oasis. My current kindle is a little beat up from extensive travel but its still ticking. If/when the Oasis goes on sale I'll probably pick one up. The warmth setting would come in handy for reading in a dimmed aircraft without having to use the overhead light.

I accomplish that by dimming the volume on my oasis. I do like the idea of warmth control, as I use it in my Mac and iOS devices

Voyager works just fine...Oasis might have a better battery

I pre-ordered when it was announced. Amazon gave me a decent trade-in price plus an additional discount for upgrading. I think in the end I only paid about a hundred bucks. The lighting is improved and the processor is supposed to be faster. Don’t think the faster processor is really noticeable. One snag, they had me send in the trade-in before they shipped the new one. Fortunately I have a Paperwhite as a backup.

I’m happy with the new device.

So you couldn't actually compare side by side. Bummer.

Yeah, not sure of processor benefits. I am sure the lighting is better and eventually I'll probably bite. Thanks for the review.

I like the size and form factor of Oasis, and the physical buttons. My wife still uses Voyager.

Don't recall ever seeing the Oasis on sale.
Thats kind of what I thought. I'm ready to bite the bullet. My old beat up paper-white is acting up and I want to upgrade. I think I'll like the new adjustable warm backlight on the Oasis and I'm willing to pay a premium to get it.

Went through a couple covers, this is my favorite:
Site keeps converting my web link to a media link. Here is the product description:
Ayotu Skin Touch Feeling Case for All-New Kindle Oasis(10th Gen, 2019 Release & 9th Gen, 2017 Release),with Auto Wake/Sleep,New Waterproof 7''Kindle Oasis Cover,Soft Shell Series KO The Dark Gray

Hmmm... Change in plan. I have a friend that has the Oasis and he let me check it out. I love the new screen but the rest of the design isnt to my liking. Specifically the thick on one side and thin on the other oddity. I suppose I could get used to it, but.... It just doesn't feel right in my hands. The other thing is that it's a little too big. I frequently stuff my kindle in my back pocket when boarding an aircraft. That leaves my hands free for my carry on and other items. Sadly, the Oasis won't fit in my pocket.

I'm going to think about it for now. But I think in the end I'll just get a new paper-white.

I still have the last generation Oasis, didn't bother with the new one this year. I actually love the form factor. BIG screen, more words on it. Fits well in my hands, usually keep the buttons on the left, as that feels most comfortable.
