After many years of flawless use my Asc1 has bit the dust. It no longer appears to be able to communicate with my receiver. I originally thought my cable was bad going out to the lnb as i wasn't getting a signal any longer. So, after inspecting that and finding nothing wrong i decided to plug the lnb cable into my receiver bypassing the ASC1 and that did the trick. I now have a picture. So, from i gather is the ASC1 is not outputting 13/18 volts nor does it let the voltage coming from the receiver bypass to the lnb either. It also isn't accepting diseq commands. Anybody else experience this issue? I'm currently using the ASC1 manually as it still controls polarity and moves the dish just fine. You just have to do it manually.

No magical component to fix...

As the issue affects both input DiSEqC sensing and output voltage, i would be suspect of the source of the medium voltage suppy. Could be as simple as reseating the ribbon connectos between tbe main and F-fitting PCB.

Place the ASC1 menu for fixed 13V or 18v output and start probing for dc voltage starting at the F-fitting PCB and work back towards the voltage regulator. Basic circuit flow troubleshooting.

Ok i'll have to open it up and take a look. Thank You

I'd reseat any cables first, pull off connectors, then reseat them back again. Then look over carefully for any burned traces on the board, or burned/popped components. Then, look for bulged tops on electrolytic caps.

IF there's anything really blatant like that, replace them, or fix the traces, etc.

arlo Any input?

Yes I do primester! No LNB power. Things that make sense and just like Brian suggested.
Select either 13 or 18 volts and probe the LNB port at the rear.
I'm accepting that we have basic electronics skills and a lot of finesse. One slip and, well. You know.
A very good understanding of your mulitmeter and have a good set of cables and fine tipped probes.

I have a touch of reverse engineering on the ASC1. You're dealing with surface mount components but the voltage regulation and rectifications sections should be straight forward.
LNB Port. Voltage?
Backwards to the pcb connector. Be sure of the lnb power header pin and ground.
No power yet? Take good and clear photos starting now of connectors, etc. Sharpie marks for your reference.
Head to the low voltage LNB supply regulator IC. Get a datasheet if you're unfamiliar with it.
Got clean DC in? And out? Or is the problem further upstream and the rectifier bridge, filter capacitor?
(Mind you. This is general from memory and I don't have a board in front of me). But I could. Later.
A piece of paper and pencil to draw the circuit at the least. Start with the basics.

If I could catch Mr. Titanium in a good mood. I wonder. How many requests do you get for repairs?
I have a couple of these units here. I'm lacking just a little something to make two of them work.
I was wondering that since you (bummer) aren't offering repairs. If you wouldn't mind if I tinkered a bit.
At your suggestion. Kind of. I took a donor ASC1 board and pulled melf diodes and looked up datasheets from the smd marking codes of active components. I have a pretty good idea of what it takes to at least circuit trace and identify failed smd components. You know.....is that a zener, schottky, or small signal diode....pnp, npn?
What mcu pin is what and where do the via's go to......
Not to make a fortune. To keep them going. Okay, maybe a cold Sammy Adams Lager here and there.
I am in the same boat. If the ASC1 is a Zippo and a vbox is a Bic. Zippo is a 45 minute drive from me, As is Case and Ka-Bar. Oh. I have the Cyclone. I'd like to be able to try it out.

If you can't fix it then you'll have to give the Research Concepts controllers a try. They are the only alternative to the ASC1. I can attest that the V-box is ass. Don't waste your money on them. I don't know what cheap third world garbage those things are designed to drive, but I fried a V-box within minutes trying to drive my 12 foot dish with it 🙄

The annoying thing about the Research Concepts controllers is the unfriendly interfacing. Uses an obtuse serial port interface, so you'll have to get a USB adapter to control it. No DiSEqC support; you have to use their ancient software to change positions with a PC. And they charge an absurd $1,000 if you want to add a web server module to make interfacing with the controller less annoying. Clearly a price point that was designed to rip off a corporation, not for a home user.

There's definitely a market for a user friendly controller that can drive a decent dish without exploding. It's a shame that no more ASC1 units will be manufactured. All existing stock of it was sold out long ago and on the rare occasions that the ASC1 pops up on eBay I see it selling for several times its MSRP, indicating that there is still demand for them.

Build a separately powered interface dual relay box with a more powerful transformer, say 6 amps 36 volts. It gets hooked to your dish motor, and the input to it is run by the V-Box. So the V-Box never sees a huge power drain, as ALL it controls is the relays in the interface box.

You can get these transformers out of old C-band receivers that have dish movers built in.

Actually if you contact dreambox 1959 on satellites.co.uk he might build you a better-than asc1. Not quite sure is it incorporates skew control for a polorotor.
RC controllers are robust and relatively cheap on eBay. Schematics and software are fully supported. I contacted them and asked if anyone had a diseqc interface. They have a lot of third party software developers. There are options for TLE satellite tracking if that's you desire and use an az-el mount.
But nobody I contacted was familiar with diseqc at all.
Then looking at the software reference manual and command string. Since there are Arduino diseqc projects. No hits on suggestions so far. A transcoder interface to receive and forward commands to the RC mover would do it.
Yes. An h bridge and external current limited power smps with would help a vbox live I would think.
More elegant and less parts would be one made from solid sate relays. Motor reverse polarity could be directly applied to the SSR inputs with current limiting resistors. Because the trigger side of SSR's is simply an LED.
You could do it Klipsch crossover style on a fancy piece of mahogany or oak. A Meanwell SMPS...you're golden.

For some reason, the satelliteguys.us site is loading a lot slower than usual on both Chrome on my Asus laptop and Safari on my iPhone.
I'm also seeing longer appearances of the blue bar at the top and the "3 blue bars" loading symbol.
Is anyone else also having the same problem? Thanks in advance.

Yeah. It's probably something going on with the MacBook as my iPhone has been pretty snappy.

I rebooted my MacBook Air and it's zipping right along. Sorry, but it was taking over 20 seconds to load pages, with the pulsing blue bars so it was munching on something.

Wasn't exactly sure where to post this. Just had a customer come in inquiring about internet. He has HughesNet and had heard good things about mine. He asked if we provided email addresses and it kinda caught me off guard. I said he should be able to keep whatever email he had been using....my sister in law is still using a BellSouth email addy and they haven't been around here for many years. He said he had gotten a letter from HughesNet stating that they had until Nov 16th to save, move, forward, whatever, their Hughesnet emails because they would lose them after that date.

I have never heard of a company simply mass-deleting email accounts (the customer still has his HughesNet service). From what I understand, in the past, the company who was ditching their email service simply sold the customer base to a company like Google.

Anyone else getting this letter. He said he would show it to me tomorrow when I go out there and set up his internet.

Doing a Google of the HughesNet Email notice, it seems that HughesNet has been trying to eliminate hosting emails since 2019. And with HughesNet filing Chapter 11 back in August, it would be a smart move to switch to a more stable Email provider. Even AT&T farmed out their Email to Yahoo! years ago.

SpaceX's Starlink and the Cellular 5G Home Internet solutions have pretty much relegated HughesNet and its high latency, low bandwidth Internet service to History. If Earth had shorter days, maybe a Geostationary Internet Solution might have stood a fighting chance…

Well, I helped him set up a gmail acct....I actually wanted to see what the new process is for setting up a gmail acct since it had been years since I set mine up. Anyway, I showed him how to forward the emails he wanted to keep over.

Can't help but wonder if a worker overlooked checking the harness. I rarely ride a roller coaster anymore but when I do I check the harness myself pretty aggressively.
Can't imagine what the son is going through.

Back on the Goliath Roller Coaster ... I'm interested to find more details as well ...
Like where on the track did this happen (somewhere I read that it was on the climb up the top), which is impossible ...

They really need to take that ride and add at the very least, seatbelts ...

The Park is opening back up on Friday, the ride will Not be opening ... personally, I would keep it closed until different type of restraints can be designed and installed (over the winter).

I find it hard to believe that this ride is even allowed to be running with the restraints that exist at the moment, there are other rides that use the same type and they have been shut down across the country.

You got to believe that every ride has at least 2 types of restraint systems in place.

I wonder what and when we will hear from the Manufacturer ... and whatever governing bodies control these ...

Just think, this is a Major Amusement Park .... I would not have any problem getting on the Roller Coasters I have rode ...

Imagine what these County Fairs and others like them, I would not be caught Dead on one of them ... they get put up and tore down every other week, where is the safety for those rides ... No Thank You.

Had no idea there were that many redundancies built into those restraints.

It makes sense, however, I would want more types of restraints, so if one doesn't work, the other does ... the restraints coming over the shoulder I would have expected ... with a Seat belt as last resort.

Fwiw, I inquired with what they use on Coasters at Cedar Point, various Coasters, different restraints according to what the car and track requires ...

NONE of the Coasters at CP use THAT particular system :)
I'm glad to see ...

According to the article, when you see a seat belt on a ride like this, it is basically used as a way of making sure the rider isn't too large/fat to safely ride the ride.

I just received 6 receiver 2 port mini Multiswitch and it work great, no external power need it, and you can connect 6 receiver instead of 4 on most Mini Multiswitches... If anyone is interested in where they can get one PM me....

Have you tested using external power? Over the years, have found unpowered polarity switching to be unreliable. Especially problematic when used with DiSEqC motors or switch stacking.
H
No I have not. I just got it the other day and it is connected to six receivers working just fine. What I do is non power mini multi-switches work best with LNBF's and with LNB's

I bought the fixed color version of these bulbs for my store several years ago...work great and no more replacing ballast. Finally had one go out and when I went back to Amazon I saw that now they come in selectable versions so no more guess work as to what color light would do best in a certain area. They are now double OR single ended...used to be strictly one way or the other. If any of you are looking at replacing the old style 4 or 8 ft bulbs, you might want to give these a try. The 8 footers are BRIGHT. I put 5 in my shooting/target shed and you can get a decent tan if you are in there long enough.

When we re-lamped my in-Laws' house for sale last year, we were able to get all the Edison bulbs and a few fixtures with switch-selectable Color Temperature. We tried a few and settled on 3000°K as the best fit for the house. Matching the lighting in all the rooms made for an inviting experience. The Shop was the only place that we went with 4000°K for the LED 4' fixtures.

The house was sold within a month of going on the market, so we must have done something right.

The other advantage is if the new owners decide that they prefer a warmer light, they can unscrew the bulbs (I think it was close to 70 bulbs) and set them to the 2500K/2700K settings.

I'll have to check these out. Thanks!
