I'm not a huge horse racing fan, but I have always followed the big three...with the Kentucky Derby being at the top of the list. As usual, this year's cover is being provided by NBC from 4-7 PM, with the race starting at around 6:25 PM.

Triple Crown Winners

1919 Sir Barton
1930 Gallant Fox
1935 Omaha
1937 War Admiral
1941 Whirlaway
1943 Count Fleet
1946 Assault
1948 Citation
1973 Secretariat
1977 Seattle Slew
1978 Affirmed

It's been a long, long, long time since we've had a Triple Crown winner. When I was a youth we had three Triple Crown winners in 5-years so I didn't think it was that big of a deal. Little did I know!

To me, Seattle Slew and Secretariat are the best horses since War Admiral.

Willllll-burrrrr.

In the late 1980s and early 1990s, I hung out downtown in a city full of cocaine dealers, so they went to the Derby every year... and to the Superbown and to any other place they could think oof where people who didn't give a damn about their money could go.

I now live in suburban Maryland, one of many localities where the decline in horse racing interest is acutely felt. As the saying goes, every time a horseman dies, he isn't being replaced by a younger one. I'll have to look into the Neilsen age breakdown for the Derby viewing audience to see if they are "bucking the trend" or if they, too, are in what may be a fateful decline.

Yeah...the decline is been felt everywhere. That is why so many are looking to casinos as the "quick fix" and making them much more "family friendly". My father has the in horse racing business for longer than I have been alive and I have seen and unfortunately experienced all the ups and downs, financially, family life and dealing with corruption that you call possibly think of. The "sport of kings" has taken alot of hits.

Miami use to be the biggest city in the horse racing world. At one point, Miami/Ft. Lauderdale area had 4 race tracks: Tropical Park, Calder, Hialeah(once one of the most beautiful race tracks in the world) and Gulfstream Park.
