Some speculation on the upcoming World Cup coverage beginning June 14th.

As we have seen, Dish has added a 4K HDR channel to complement its 4K channel. The World Cup will be shot with 4K HDR cameras in Russia for the event. Fox will have the coverage in the US on its regular channel as well as FS1. So, I can see that we will probably get 4K HDR matches, at least on the those scheduled for FS1 coverage. The good thing, after the Olympic debacle, is that you will get 4K matches even if you don’t have an HDR compatible 4K TV. The same would go for the 4K Joey if it is, indeed, incapable of HDR.

All that said, I just read an interesting article that said that the HDR version will be HLG, not HDR10. The Olympic coverage was HDR10. HLG (Hybrid Log-Gamma) will be the HDR version that is slated to be used for future OTA HDR programming. But, not all HDR capable TVs are HLG capable, just like some early 4K TVs are not HDR capable. My 2016 Vizio has been updated to accept HLG so maybe many other brands have done something similar. If not, at least you will be able to watch in 4K this time around.

I'm hoping HDR10+ "wins" the HDR war (and soon).

And I hope LG signs on as I simply must have OLED.

You are getting me excited with this news/ prognostication..
The World Cup is by far my favorite Sports tournament and watching many of the matches in 4K would be epic.

Interesting.

I saved the Olympics opening ceremony in 4K HDR even though I wasn’t able to watch it earlier on my non HDR projector without using an external device to fool the receiver.

I just tried it and now it works without the external device. They must have updated the software to allow a non HDR display to work with HDR content.

Hey Dish Network -

Why don't you fill that 4K channel with some programming. I'm sure that a deal could of been struck with Sky channel to air the Royal Wedding. Flipped to your channel - only to see nothing.
they could have shown the royal wedding also too in 4k also too first time sky is own by Fox doing it in 4k so come on.

Watching this game. Video is great but audio seems to be breaking up at least for me......

Also checked the channel on my non 4K setup. Was only running 1080i, but the sound was also breaking up. After a commercial it would improve but then slowly get bad. Makes me wonder if DISH monitors this at all.... SJ

The camera they leave on during commercials seems rock solid and the sound as well. But then when the FS1 kicks in, things start to break up. Guess they have some issues to iron out. Thanks for validating it is not just me with the issue! SJ

Yeah, sound and video sucks! Video looks great when it isn't jumping around. I'm guessing that it is an issue with the production trailer based on the commercial camera being just fine.

Glad to see that the audio problems were not due to my Hopper3. The problem appears to be the fox sports feed rather than Dish. If the feed is bad Dish can not improve it.

Still no official word on the World Cup? It is almost a week away.

Direct TV has already mentioned that they will have World Cup games in 4K and 4K HDR....

I noticed that my Hooper 3 shows the 4K HDR channel, but my 4K Joey does not. Does the 4K Joey have the ability to do HDR? Thanks. SJ

I noticed that in the other thread there will be World Cup matches in 4K HDR. Thanks Bobby for the info.

Is there any word yet how many matches will be in 4K HDR? (Hopefully as many as DirecTV.) ;)
