What is the HR24 and how do I ensure that's the one I get? Can I get the same deals at local dealers? Which receivers should I look for for the entire house if I go with the whole house DVR?

What are the abbrevs E*, D*, etc?

The HR24 is the current model Hi-Def DVR and you really can't ever be 110% sure that's what they will bring, but the chances are good. You will be good with multi-room on any thing they bring out, just make sure that you order it and they set it up correctly.

E* = EchoStar = DishNetwork
D* = DirecTV

People are just too lazy to type things out sometimes which would just make everything so clear the first time out.

The "normal" setup for 4 tvs is:
HR24- Hi def dvr
H24- Hi def
D12- standard
D12- standard

This is assuming you get the current models

The WHD (whole-home dvr) aka MRV (multi-room viewing) is only accessible with HD recvrs meaning you cannot watch what you recorded on the D12's.
