I've always had good luck with Panasonic and Toshiba. I've heard folks complain the certain models of Sony recorders have won't record premium channels. Whatever you get, make sure you buy it from from a dealer that has easy returns in case you have trouble.

That probably has to do with HDMI, and I would guess not limited to SONY.

I bought the Sony RDR-G 257 on line for 54 dollars, by the way it is a refurbish unit from walmart. I record off the DVR 24-100 and I had problem with new relese from HBO. Other than that no problems. I'm using the yellow cable for video and the out to the tv is a HDMI. The unit is slim and very easy to use compare to other units than I bought in the past.
