yours is the first post i have seen in these forums like this for the past month and a half (i did not frequent this forum before that) .. so i would say that it is not at all common for a receiver to go bad this quickly ... as long as you have it well ventilated - it should be good for at least a couple of years ..
Basically it would not power on. Unplugged for 5 mins per the manual and got power but unit froze looking for signals, step 1 of 2 was the onscreen display. Spoke to a CSR who advised to reset via the red button but nothing. Prounounced DOA
It can happen to any dvr, even the mighty E*. I had a 811 (not a dvr) DOA myself. I installed E* with a friend for a while and everynow and then would get a bad dvr, receiver, lnb. It happens. I have had my HR20 for over 2 mths now with now promblems.
Nobody said there weren't good ones....but BOY there are alot of bad ones!

Electronics are fickle, basically it's a computer .
They normally say electronics will go bad in the first 90 days if they are going to go bad.
