If you have rebooted and you still get the same message, the unit will have to be replaced.

• Error in the receiver's hard drive.

Yep, hard drive issue. If you can get it to boot (may have to try repeatedly) you can do a graceful shutdown and try to clone the data to a new drive depending on what the receiver is. If a genie, it would violate the TOS. If older, DirecTV does not want them back. There are threads about using Gparted to clone. I've done this many times.

If you have to replace it, you'll lose all the recordings on it.

usually yes. H23 and HR23 and lower they pretty much dont care though.

Technically you could buy a nice 2tb external HDD and be back in business I think.

that might have worked before the drive took a dump. not sure if it would get past that now though.

Same thing happened to me last week with an HR24 receiver. They replaced it but don't want the bad receiver back. I have 2 HR24s now in the garage doing nothing.

There is a local repair guy says he thinks its the power supply causing the Hard drive to fail is that possible

Missed this reply.. is there instructions on how to do make that work and what model HD.. i have a 1TB Seagate hd at home already

I believe they need to be esata drives, that said, it's been a few years since I used my EHDs

it'll reformat the HD when you're using it for the DVR.

Unplug both the dvr and the hard drive, boot up the hard drive and plug it in, then boot up the dvr.

Do it in the order that Chip mentioned ... also, it will reformat, so you WILL lose everything on it.

I thought it had to be an esata ...

Ok any specific brand or model anyone can recommend.. I'm finding several different kinds that have both USB 3.0 and esata but not many are esata only.. also what size, is there a max the hr24 will take
