If you have rebooted and you still get the same message, the unit will have to be replaced.
  • Error in the receiver's hard drive.
 
Yep, hard drive issue. If you can get it to boot (may have to try repeatedly) you can do a graceful shutdown and try to clone the data to a new drive depending on what the receiver is. If a genie, it would violate the TOS. If older, DirecTV does not want them back. There are threads about using Gparted to clone. I've done this many times.

If you have to replace it, you'll lose all the recordings on it. :(
 
Same thing happened to me last week with an HR24 receiver. They replaced it but don't want the bad receiver back. I have 2 HR24s now in the garage doing nothing.
 
So just plug in the hd into the sata port and turn plug in the hr24 and it takes care of itsself?

Unplug both the dvr and the hard drive, boot up the hard drive and plug it in, then boot up the dvr.
