Fortec Star Lifetime Ultra cannot update bin file

Hi Everyone!

I am a newbie to this FTA stuff. I recently purchased a Fortec Star Lifetime Ultra receiver and I have been scanning all the forums and FAQ’s to learn more about this hobby.

I noticed that you can update the firmware on the Fortec unit using a program that is downloadable from the Fortec site as well as the appropriate BIN file (in my case NTSC).

I am not having any success and keep getting the “download failed” message.

I tested the cable and it is a “straight through” 9 pin female-to-female serial cable.

I ran a port monitor on my COMM1 PC port and logged the transmission to the device.

When the error message from the Fortec software appears (after what I assume is a 30 second timeout), I hit the cancel button (instead of the retry button) and then my Fortec unit will re-boot itself. The update is not applied an it says it has the same firmware that it came with.

Any help would be appreciated.

Is this a new model with the RS 232 connector not attached to the rear panel and came packaged in the carton with the brown cardboard interior rather than the white?

Boozekeg... sorry you haven't got many replies.

Since the receiver is new, and you are trying to update the factory firmware, I would suggest you contact the manufacturer or your vendor for support.

I think people haven't responded to your request because when other people have asked this question, it is usually related to how to load a bin file on their receiver to engage in signal theft. I know nothing of your intentions, nor am I making any judgements or accusations. Simply some persective as to why you may have not received many replies.

Perhaps if you clarify what you are trying to accomplish, we can be of more help!

I didn't respond quickly because it took me 4 hours to scroll down the error messages.

Try a different serial cable or wait for someone who has one of these units.
If all else fails, email Fortec for a solution, if you're trying to load a hacked BIN file it'll kill your receiver and you'll have to RMA it to Fortec who report any illegal Dish Network key flash attempts to the authorities and they'll take away your legs and two fingers of their choice.

You said you have a striaght RS232 cable.... Usually you would need a Null Modem cable to talk to another piece of equipment.

Mine works fine with a serial (non-null). I used one to organize my FTA Channel Lists on the same receiver.
