Intelsat Announces Successful Launch of Intelsat 34

Luxembourg, 20 August 2015

Intelsat S.A. (NYSE: I), the world’s leading provider of satellite services, today announced that its Intelsat 34 satellite was launched successfully from French Guiana aboard an Ariane 5 vehicle. Liftoff occurred at 4:34 pm EDT. The Intelsat 34 satellite separated from the rocket’s upper stage 40 minutes after launch, at 5:14 pm EDT, and signal acquisition has been confirmed.

Intelsat 34 is a C- and Ku-band satellite to be placed into service at the 304.5ºE orbital location. It will replace Intelsat 805 and Galaxy 11 as the third in Intelsat’s leading Latin America, pan-regional video distribution neighborhood (which includes Intelsat 11 and Intelsat 21). Intelsat 34 includes a C-band payload which will deliver media distribution services for blue chip media powerhouses including Fox Sports and HBOLA. The satellite also hosts a leading Direct-to-Home (“DTH”) platform in Ku-band as well as a specialized Ku-band payload serving the North Atlantic that will support broadband services for the fast growing aeronautical and maritime mobility sector. Intelsat 34 was built by SSL.

“Intelsat 34 is a great example of the breadth of services that Intelsat’s satellites are able to provide to communities around the world,” said Stephen Spengler, Chief Executive Officer, Intelsat. “With services spanning from DTH and cable programming distribution, to broadband for vessels and planes traversing the North Atlantic, Intelsat 34 demonstrates our role in delivering broadband infrastructure and media distribution with superior reliability. We are thrilled with today’s successful launch and look forward to our next two launches which are scheduled for the first quarter of 2016, including the first of our Intelsat EpicNG® satellites, Intelsat 29e.”

Where is 304.5ºE orbital position relative to the earth?

Here is the footprint map for IS 34:

http://exnetapps.intelsat.com/flash...t%2034%20at%20304.5%BA%20E&display=map&spot=0

If the footprint maps can be believed, the coverage area of IS 34 on C Band is about the same, but perhaps 2 dB weaker, than the current satellite, Intelsat 805.

Intelsat 805 footprint:

The North Atlantic Ku beam of IS 34 does reach to New Mexico, but doesn't look good for most of Canada. Based on the footprint and Intelsat info, I think the Ku beam is intended more for the aeronautical and maritime markets, so maybe no FTA. It looks like there are only 5 Ku transponders on the North Atlantic Beam, all vertical and all below 11,700 MHz. But this document suggests that some transponders are switchable between the North Atlantic and Brazilian beam:

Intelsat reported last Monday that Intelsat 34 is now operational at 55.5° W and traffic was being moved over from I805. I'm not seeing any big changes on C Band, perhaps a bit more consistent signal strength from transponder to transponder.

I'm seeing some signals on Ku, all between 10,900 and 11,700. None are strong. EBS Pro reports one as being 16APSK, the other as 32APSK.

Just scanned in 81 channels ITC from 49 TPs that locked using the AZBox Ultra on the Winegard system. I'll have to boot the Micro HD to see what it had on the old satellite then rescan with that one.

Will IS 34 replace the Amazonas 1 Ku sat that's listed at 55.4W?

UPDATE: Hummm, Micro HD on the EXACT SAME DISH NOT MOVED FROM THE AZBOX SCAN I JUST DID ONLY FOUND 40 CHANNELS FROM 39 TPS??:wtf

I guess I better connect that AZ back up and look at this?

From what I've read, all the Brazilian channels on both Galaxy 11 and Amazonas 1 will be moved to IS 34. Galaxy 11 is 15 years old and Amazonas 1 has a leak in one of its station keeping fuel tanks. Its orbit is now inclined .48 degrees.

BTW, my Micro HD did not find the stingray music channels on a blind scan. I had to manually enter that transponder.

I don't scan anything but TV stuff so there's probably more channels there than what I picked up. Did a couple of rescans with the Micro HD and it didn't find as many as it did on the first scan???

Is there a channel ATV HD from Peru on this bird? Do you think a 6 foot dish here in Wisconsin can reliably pick this up?

3747 H 1600 FEC 3/5 8PSK DVB-S2 Pilot On It's listed for Arequipa, Peru ATV SUR but I haven't tried to lock it. This one is listed as H264 also.

IMHO you're going to be asking a lot from a 6 footer to lock it in Wisconsin.

UPDATE: My 10ft Winegard system WILL NOT LOCK THIS TP in central Virginia.

I have ATV+HD, ATV+1seg. 3775 H 8000
Unsure about the 'reliably' part. Haven't tried with a 6 myself. I've never had one.

Good to know. My 10 footer cannot see that part of the sky, and I have a spare 6 footer. Which will now stay in my basement. Thank you !
