I know this is a general question but I was just wondering are there any particular things I should do to take care of my DVR?

Basically, what I wanted to know is what things can I do to make my DVR last as long possible?

As others have mentioned, keep it well ventilated. Occasionally you might want to use an aerosol duster blowing it through the ventilation slots. Don't move it when its turned on and use a good surge protector.

And if you're really adventurous you might try defragging the disk, see complete instructions at  http://www.datadocktorn.nu/us_frag1.php :dev

Echo EatMyVolts about NOT moving the DVR even when it is off, but still plugged in. HDD's are delicate and UNpredictable about how they handle shock when still plugged in. Always disconnect the DVR from the electrical outlet and wait one minute before moving the DVR to a new place or otherwise flipping or twisting it around as many installers do.
