Diamondback fans may be sending Kershaw a fruit basket- that gets them closer to the NL West title.

Funny you should say that. Was watching the Diamondbacks telecast against the Pirates last night, and when they were discussing D-Backs team MVP, one of the announcers mentioned Kershaw!

I know he will not be sending Para the basket

BTW, he is 3-1 against AZ this year

Clayton Kershaw silences the debate

LOS ANGELES -- Clayton Kershaw silenced the San Francisco Giants once again Thursday night, pitching the Los Angeles Dodgers to a 2-1 victory in front of 32,526 at Dodger Stadium. Mostly, though, he silenced all debate.Let there be no further argument, because the issue has been decided: Kershaw -- the Los Angeles Dodgers left-hander who has morphed over the past year from an occasionally erratic ace-in-waiting to a guy whose future most definitely is now -- should be the 2011 National League Cy Young Award winner.

Has to be. Simply must be.

"I was thinking about that standing in center field in the eighth inning," the Dodgers' Matt Kemp said. "If this boy doesn't win the Cy Young, something is definitely wrong. No question about it."

Does that mean he will win it? Well, not necessarily. It is a rather complex electorate that decides these things, a selection of 32 members of the Baseball Writers' Association of America -- and more specifically, two members from each of the 16 National League cities. Several of those cities are along the Eastern seaboard, and several others are in the Midwest. That means that only the most insomnia-stricken among some of those writers have seen every Kershaw start.

Still, with each one of those starts, Kershaw has become increasingly impossible to ignore, and it is beginning to seem inconceivable that anyone could overlook him. Not when he is tied for the league lead in victories, not when he blows away every other pitcher when it comes to blowing away hitters. Not when he has become a 20-game winner, Kershaw having been all of 2 years old the last time a Dodgers pitcher accomplished that. Not when he has beaten the Giants -- the defending World Series champion Giants, no less -- five times this season, something no Dodgers pitcher had done since Don Newcombe did it when the teams were crosstown rivals in 1951, according to ESPN Stats & Information.

And certainly not when he has now beaten Tim Lincecum, himself a two-time Cy Young Award winner, four times in four head-to-head matchups this season.

Lincecum's ERA in those four starts was 1.24. Kershaw's was 0.30. And that, as Robert Frost once wrote, has made all the difference, especially given that the Dodgers won those games by scores of 2-1, 1-0, 2-1 and 2-1.

Looks like he will win the ERA title since Cueto has been shut down for the year due to a pulled muscle in his back and because of that he won't have enough innings to qualify.

The thing is though, he was not outstanding last night. He did not have it from the beginning. The last few starts he had no hit stuff and pin point accuracy. This start he seemed to finesse a little more and rely more on his slow overhand curve-ball (something he uses a lot when he does not have the sharp break on his slider and cannot hit his spots as well)

He is currently leading the league in just about every category

1 - ERA: 2.27
1 - W: 20
1 - K: 242
3 - IP: 226 (would be #1 if he wasn't kicked out of the game in his previous start)

IMO, This years Red Sox team is quickly becoming very unlikable. The excuses and whining is really unbearable. I feel bad for Tito who has to defend these sad sacks on a daily basis. John Lackey has rubbed off on some of these guys.

I really like John Lester, but those last 2 starts where unexcusable.

Stiff necks, back spasms, finger sprains, ect... This team is as soft as charmin.

Once again, roster construction was questionable at best. That's on Theo.

The Yankees have defeated the Rays in the first game of a day-nighter. The Yanks have clinched a postseason berth for the 16th time in the last 17 years.

What is with latin ball players, especially Domimicans, and false IDs??!!

Closer Leo Nunez suspended by Florida Marlins, leaves country

Clark Spencer cspencer@MiamiHerald.com

Closer Leo Nunez has been placed on Major League Baseball’s restricted list and was suspended by the Marlins for undisclosed reasons for the remainder of the season, a source told The Miami Herald on Thursday.

A person familiar with Nunez’s immigration status, however, said the reliever has been playing under an assumed name, and the issue has prompted him to return to his native Dominican Republic.

Nunez might have been aware of the issue as far back as July, the source told The Herald.

“I can’t yet comment,” said Nunez’s agent, Andy Mota. “This is very recent. I don’t want to say anything at all.”

A source told The Associated Press that Nunez’s real name is Juan Carlos Oviedo, and he is 29, a year older than listed in the Marlins’ media guide.

Pat Courtney, senior vice president of public relations for Major League Baseball, said all he could add regarding Nunez was that he had been placed on the restricted list for “personal reasons, and it doesn’t involve baseball.”

Uh oh. According to Buster Olney: If BOS rains out today, it means that they would have to bring back Jon Lester on three days rest if they want him on final day of season.

Bruce Hurst pitched Game 7 of the 1986 World Series on three days rest.

Lester got knocked out in the third after throwing only fifty-somethng pitches, so he should be as fresh for the final game of the regular season as Denny McLain was in the 1968 World series when he got knocled out so early that he could come back and be dominant with two days rest.

The Red Sox today will attempt to save their season by sending out two starting pichers with ERAs of over 5.00. How many times in baseball history has a team started two pitchers in a double header with ERAs over 5.00 with over a hundred innings pitched each? Just wondering...

From ESPN.com's "preview"

...Wakefield (7-7, 5.08 ERA) has gone 1-3 with a 6.21 ERA in his last six starts. ...

Lackey (12-12, 6.49) is 0-3 with a 9.12 ERA in his last five starts. He gave up eight runs and 11 hits in 4 1/3 innings of an 18-9 win over Baltimore on Monday.

$160 million a year in payroll and this is what they have available for starting pitchers.

"I'm pretty frustrated," Lackey said.

So are we.
