MLB Magic Numbers and Eliminations

The Twins, Royals and Mariners have all been officially eliminated tonight.

What a difference a year makes for the Twins- from back-to-back division champs to being eliminated before Vikings season starts.

Never thought Minnesota would nosedive the way they have this year.

Q. How did the Tigers get to an ODD number, they were 18 when you started posting and have played and beat Cleveland since, should be 14 or 12, they beat Cleveland again today to drop 2 more off the total.

The White Sox have since passed the Indians. The Tigers magic number is now 13 over Chicago and 12 over Cleveland.

The Padres were mathematically eliminated last night.

Q. The Tigers are currently 9 and 9.5 games ahead of the Wh Sox and Indians.
Sox are 9 out and play the Indians, the Tigers don't play, but would reduce thier MN if the 2nd place team loses, so, if the Indians beat the Wh Sox, they would jump into 2nd and be 9 out as well.

Can the Tigers pick up a game in the MN category tonight at all ?

No. The WINNER of tonight's Indians-White Sox game will still have 70 losses, which means the maximum amount of wins they can have is 92. The idle Tigers have 81 wins, which keeps their MN at 12 (to get to 93 wins).

Thats kinda what I thought ....
Now, the Indians and Wh Sox play one another this weekend, so it looks like the only way the Tigers reduce thier MN is by the games they win, I suspect that the Indians and Wh Sox will split.

Everyone is getting close to those single digit magic numbers. Which means most races are pretty much over.

The only teams that are currently not in first that realistic still have a chance are the Angels, and maybe the Rays. The only real race is the AL West. All of the other division are pretty much decided (one team would have to have a total collapse at the same time another gets on fire)

The Dodgers have a good chance of passing the Giants for second place. I would have never seen that coming

Tigers win, wh sox win, Tigers MN down to 9.
Jimbo, another thing to start looking at is the Tigers magic number for HFA in the first round. With the Tigers winning and the Rangers losing today, the Tigers MN is now 16 for HFA.

Are the Tigers ahead of the Rangers now ?
Tigers have played one more game and have 2 less losses ...

Tigers are 6-3 against Texas, 4-3 against NY and 1-5 against Boston this year.

Do they only play the east guys like 6 or 7 times a year, they have no more games against them left.
That is really a poor schedule that MLB has going when you play your own division 19 times and the rest 6.

Yes the Tigers are 1.5 games up on the Rangers.

I kind of like the way the end the season against division opponents for the last month or so. That way the first place AL Central team isn't playing the Yankees while the second place team plays Baltimore to decide which team goes to the playoffs. The way it is now the second place team has a chance to play against the first place team several times down the home stretch so we can really see who deserves to be there.
