NBA Lockout thread

Whose side are you on in this dispute- the players or the owners?

Players.... I cannot back a group that cries poverty all the time, then goes and sign a player way over the hill to a contract you would give a franchise player. Or holds cities, counties and states hostage for stadiums, threatens to relocate...then refuses to put on an worthwhile product and tries to justify price increases every season.

Did anyone see highlights of the Lebron game the other night? Oh my goodness it was bad.

Hopefully the players don't think people are going to pay money to see that stuff for any length of time...yikes.

it's streetball....the only organized about that is the row of seats where fans watch.....

Sounds like the take-away from yesterday is that both sides agree salaries should drop, but there is a huge gap in how much. That will probably be the basis for future negotiations.

Lebron has announced that whenever the lockout is settled he will report to camp one day before everyone else in the NBA reports...to make up for the fact that he went on strike one day early in the playoffs. ;)

:haha

Meetings scheduled for two days in a row this week. That's a good thing.

Owners want a hard cap like the NHL has, players want a soft cap like the NBA currently has. Both sides have agreed payroll will be reduced...the question is how much?

Wondering out loud if any of the reports of elite players going seas have any affected to the planning of these meeting.

Bahaha! :D

It will be back. The players HAVE a option...they can play somewhere else... owners do not. What are they gonna do, put street ball in their stadiums. The novelty would ware off in 10 games. Then it would cost more to HAVE games than to not have them.

This has nothing to do with the negotiations. It will be back when the two sides agree on a formula to divide revenue...and not before. The same thing the NHL and NFL have recently gone through.

It cost the NHL an entire season. It cost the NFL one preseason game. In the past it cost baseball a World Series.

Time will tell...but players threatening to play overseas is not a factor. If they want to play overseas that badly, they should go. Negotiations will continue without them.

You are missing my point. The NBA owners do not have an option to make money, they either do with a season or they don't without one. The players do have option where if they want to make, they will go over season. Once games start being cancelled, owners will get more desperate to negociation because they will have no option like the players do. Yeah, they will continue to negociate, but the players will not be anywhere as desperate as the owner will be.

...at least that is how I see it.

The other side of that coin is while there are a few players who can go overseas to make money, the vast majority do not have that opportunity. At least not to make big money. It's not like hundreds of players can (or would even want to) go overseas.

The clubs in Europe sometimes have strict guidelines where they are only allowed 1-3 foreigners, and no overseas team wants the backup small forward from the Charlotte Bobcats anyway...or probably even the starting small forward for that matter.

The Kobes and Lebrons, who do have the opportunity to play overseas, don't even need the money. But many in the rank and file are going to have some financial problems if paychecks don't start making it into their bank accounts in November. This will put huge pressure on players not named Kobe, Lebron, or about 10-20 other names.

And they will in turn put pressure on the players union. Enough pressure to make the union agree to a deal close to what the owners are offering? Time will tell.

I disagree that the European leagues would not want any NBA players. They know that there is a slim chance they will get the Kobes, Lebrons and Wades of the world because of the high risk value of injury and pissing off any good will that country may have with the NBA. The rest of the rank and file OF NAME making around $4-8 million dollar range will have places to play because those league and clubs would love to have SRO in all their games as well as the TV exposure and maybe...just maybe, show off their league and city to the NBA showing the league they 'could' possibly host an NBA team down the line.

But as you state, we will see.
