Question about grounding (lightning/surge protection)

Surge protectors are something that works where they are and not much further away. They are also limited to stopping surges (and some static electricity) but they won't stop lightning.

Turning something off isn't as good as unplugging it as major events can send voltages (through inductance) on lines that aren't supposed to have voltages on them.
