What if it is the other way around, the stations WANT a super station package on DirecTV like Dish has so they can make even MORE money in subscription fees and advertising dollars.
I am still dreaming in HD
back in the day (when they carried baseball and other sports)) they made a ton of money on the ads but now a days you are very much correct..not to mention stations such as WPIX and WOR were very popular in places such as upstate New York because there were very few independent stations aroundI am not sure that the stations make all that much off superstation carriage. Most of the ads are local and the added viewers are outside the market area and don't mean much to advertisers.
Like many former Chicagoans who have moved to another part of the country, I still watch WGN America daily. White Sox, Bulls, 9PM news. I'm confident a deal will get done.
Also, Games being blacked out are not controlled by the local team, it is the deal that each sport has giving the local broadcaster exclusive rights to that game within their DMA. If the White Sox are playing the Red Sox, and the game is on WGN Am, there is no reason for it to be blacked out in Ohio.
Today in the Hartford Courant there was a 2 1/2 Page insert. (Note the Hartford Courant is owned by Tribune)
digiblur said:The providers should be able to charge their costs for locals. As actually they are going in the hole on locals by themselves. The amount of money they spend on regional uplinks, fiber backhauls, POPs in each city, spotbeam satellites, etc.
Tribune Co., owner of 16 television stations across the country including KTLA-TV Los Angeles, is threatening to pull its channels from satellite broadcaster DirecTV.
Now which is it .... one article claims panic to the customers that they are not going to be able to see thier stations ....
Making it sound like D* is threatening to pull them ...
Then this article is stating that it is Tribune that is actually pulling them ... which makes more sense to me.

I think you may be mistaken about Antenna TV carrying Cubs games.
I used to watch WGN all the time when I had cable, but now that I have Directv and they have less Cubs games I don't watch but maybe 5 times a year.
FYI, they have not yet exited bankruptcy ...
