What Are the Benefits of the Mio Over Other Receivers?

I really enjoy the Mio and I'm not really taking full advantage of mine yet either. Just loaded up the slots with other images and made some backups Monday for comparison. I still keep going back to the NA Satdream GR image.

I wanted a 4K capable receiver, the streaming ability is another plus.

I've been running E2 for 3 years now on my Amiko that's pretty low in memory and processor power. OpenPLI has been my image of choice for that box, not much support anymore. The Mio opens up the selections to experiment with.
 

I haven't reinstalled OpenVIX yet but it looks like time is correct on TNAP, OpenSPA and OpenDroid with MT zone selected. TNAP had a problem with the MT zone out of the box but now it looks OK after a couple of hours running on that image with the mountain time zone set.
 

I need to take some time to figure out why openvpn doesn't work. I got a connection between the client and server but I haven't been able to stream with it enabled. I didn't see anything in the server log so I'll have to take a peek at the client log. I'm using the same config file format, like with other devices on my network, with appropriate certs. All other clients work fine so I have to find out what's tripping this one up. Kinda fun playing with computers but the more complex the network the greater chance of something going wrong which ends up causing frustration.
 

Maybe their server is down. I've had connections to a server and couldnt go beyond the connection.

I'm the admin for the server and I can assure you that it was up and working properly. Other devices connecting to the server via the LAN or WAN were working fine - they all had an internet connection through the openvpn server except for the osmio4k.
 
The items that I put in bold would be of most use to me. Most of my satellite viewing time is blindscanning and watching news feeds. I like to watch breaking news from the source (unedited). Currently I am using a U4 Quad Hybrid which has an extremely slow blind scan.

comfortably_numb, when you say "Able to tune frequencies most other appliance STB can not" do you mean that it can lock weak transponders, low bit-rate transponders, or closely spaced transponders?

All of the above. The Edision locks all of the CBS and FOX feeds on 99, whereas the Amiko HD.265 had difficulty locking some of them regularly. The Edision can also tune and identify the low SR 11804 V 1107 on 103, whereas my Amiko can see the frequency but not find any services. Additionally, it handles high bitrate feeds with ease.

Could your firewall or anti-virus be blocking access? I had a problem with a proxy server that nearly drove me crazy. As it turned out, my anti-virus had black listed communication with their server. I love ESET, but sometimes in will block access to some devices for no apparent reason.

I have a YouTube downloader that ESET doesn't like. When I do an update, I have to disable the anti-virus for 10 minutes until it's done downloading the update. I recently bought a new NetGear router a few days ago, and had to put the old router back in line and bridge it to the new one to make it work. I eventually figured out what was going on and fixed the problem.

It turned out that the Cisco Connect software had to be removed from the computer. They didn't play well together.

ESET is enterprise quality protection. We use it in my work environment. Very pleased with it. But yes, sometimes it is a bit too conservative in what it blocks. I feel like we're well protected, though.

I've never had a virus or malware since it was installed, but yes, it's a bit particular sometimes. Some think it's a bit pricey, but when you look at the consequences of having cheaper programs, it's well worth the money and their tech support is marvelous. I tried Norton once, boy was that a mistake. It's a virus in itself. Has a hell of a time removing it. They'd block removal if it was time to renew it.

I had to physically remove it by deleting all the registry keys related to it, and you know how risky that can be. I made two backup copies of the registry on a thumb drive before I began, and removed them in Safe Mode. Never put their garbage on any of my computers again.
 

Nmap shows no issues with the firewall.
 
Well this thread has gone a bit off topic -- from OS Mio advantages to OS Mio internet configuration issues. That's OK, many threads here drift and I have been O.T. a bit myself. I have made up my mind so it doesn't matter anyway.

Fast blindscan and maybe getting more channels would be nice, but to me not worth nearly $200 (after CA tax) for an OS Mio. I might reconsider if there is ever a dual DVB-S2 tuner OS Mio. I find it very convenient to have one tuner for C and one for KU with my current receiver.

I had planned on making 2 of the same image. One with C Band sats and the other KU sats and switching between them. Is there any reason that I cannot do this with the unit that I just got? (I'm still reading and have not powered it up yet.)

Yes, that would work fine for scanning/viewing.

The shortcoming of separating bands between images is that you couldn't set-up scheduled timers to switch between the two images for recording.

The great thing about the OS Mio 4k's four multiboot slots is that these options are even possible! So easy to switch between operating systems by simply rebooting the receiver. It's like owning 4 different STBs!

The OS Mio is the finest receiver of any kind that I've ever owned. If you ever change your mind, you won't be disappointed

Price of the dual tuner MIO will likely be at least $100 or more higher than the single tuner version. IMO, of course. Doubtful it'll be cheaper anyway.
