I may have had this discussion a year or so ago, but it never hurts to talk about it again. :)

I got a DSR-905 from the KC installer the other day, and I am almost certain it will authorize OK. The battery shows 3.2 V still so I don't think there will be a problem there. The 7th - 10th digits of the serial number show 1066, so I am assuming it was manufactured in early March of 2001. I can swap out the battery myself I think.

I also have some nice GI-650i receivers I got also and could piggy-back one of them with the 905.

I have had my DSR-920 running for about a year now, and it has worked flawlessly. I changed out the battery in it when I first got it.

For those of you who have used both 905s and 920s, which one would you keep and use, and which one would you sell?

I will probably sell one of them, no sense in just letting one set in the closet.

I would dump the 905, I have three 920's and they work great...all on a APC UPS ...just in case!. With the 905 you could have problems with two devices. And besides you can get the 920 at a good price if you have to replace one. Just my opinion......

Since the 905 does more symbol rates than the 920, I would keep it. Hook it up call NPS or SRL and have them hit it, and see if it works. If it does you have a winner.

I would probably keep the 905, you can tune in Star choice with no worries and catch some free channels at times, plus like the poster above mentioned it has the same tuner as the 922 so it will get more channels.

Hey tdti1!

You mean the 905 is not affected by the Star Choice TDT overload?

If so, that might be a point in it's favor. :)

Hey sergei,
The more than one device problem can be solved with setting the codes in the remote control. That's how I have the 920 in the living room and the 920 in my den now, and it hasn't ever been a problem.

I just got it set up and am getting ready to call NPS. :)

Will know more shortly.

WooHoo!!

It authorized fine. The Unit ID was the old decimal kind and they had to convert, but as soon as they did, it worked great.

Now downloading the channel maps and guide. :)

I am going to write down all the count numbers on all the programmed satellites on the 920, and put one of the analog boxes in place and probably go with the 905.

BTW, I changed the remote control codes so it won't interfere with anything else operating so far. :)

Thanks for everyone's input.

I have each 920 on it own dish, one outputs channel 3 and another to channel 4 and each with it own programming. The third receiver is hooked up for me to play with. This keeps the wife happy, if you want to get one mad move the dish when she's watching a show.... next project is to put up a dish for FTA this summer.

That is precisely why I have a separate 920 receiver and dish for the family. They also have a separate dish and FTA receiver.

My wife doesn't sit down to watch TV very often, but God protect the poor soul who messes with her channel when she takes the time to sit down and get interested.

The 905 is superior to the 920. The 905 does more S/R rates, IMO has a better tuner, and does not have a dish mover hardware to burn out or break.

Use an old analog receiver or a fta box with a V-box or G-box to move your dish.

I have two 905's and love them.

I have two dishes here since Mom came to live with me. When she is watching TV Land or Lifetime Movie Network on her 4DTV, God help me if I moved the dish!! LOL.

She has the 7.5 dish, V-box, fortec ultra, and a DSR-905 for her tv. I am planning a HD free to air receiver for her also.
Only HD she gets is over the air HD channels. We have 14 digital tv over the air stations here for now.

(We say NO to pizza dishes) LOL. She had D* before and likes C-band since she never loses reception when it rains or heavy clouds pass over.

You have enough "separate" dishes for half the county's families!!!!:D

I've never had or actually seen a 905, but I would keep it before the 920, for the extra SR's. I've have a 920 and it works well, but it only gets 2 SR's (I think it's only 2), but if the 905 has the tuner of the 922, then keep it.

I've been on Star Choice many of times with my 905 and never had a problem , of course it wasn't by accident ....... I had read about the 905 not being affected by it.
Thanks Jayelem!

That alone was the deciding factor. I have about got the position counts written down, but may have to quit until tomorrow afternoon. Have company coming. :)

The counts will be the same on the analog as what they are now on the 920, so no use having to hunt for satellites again especially when there are so few analog feeds left.

Thanks Truckracer and Al!

Yes, I have decided to go with the 905. I'll have the 920 up for sale soon. I hate to see it go, but need the money for other projects. :D

Hey Phlatwound,

My wife gave me permission to put up a "test" dish out on the parking lot, so that will make dish number 6. :)

I have a non-penetrating mount that I will pick up next Wednesday, so no digging holes, or pouring concrete. Just set it out there, fill it with blocks, and level it up and it will be ready to go.

EDIT: I told her that I couldn't be running up and down two ladders and disturbing my working systems to test out all this new "stuff" I have. :D

Correct the 905 is not affected, it does not need to use up space for all the analog transponders since it is a digital receiver only, since you seem to have one of the old 905's you mite want to swap that battery asap.

I like the 905, most advanced hobbiests use a pro dish mover and just add it to there collection of receivers to tune in whatever is up there, and for a sub.

That's good news about the TDT count. I'll certainly give that a shot. :)

Yes, now is probably the best time to change out the battery before I put it in real service, and next thing you know a year has gone by, and the battery still isn't changed.

Will send PM momentarily Iceberg. :)

Oh man... I think this is the 3rd year I keep saying I will change mine in the old GI 922, I will have only myself to blame if he dies :(

I will try to get around to it this summer...
