Xoom wifi is rumored launching very soon (around month's end) . Price is expected to be $599 which is the same as the equivalent ipad.

It looks like most of the tablets, being it Honeycomb, QNX or webOS, copy Apple's iPad pricing starting at $500 for a WiFi only 16GB...

Nothing wrong with a reasonable profit...

The retailer has to have some margin in the price. Figure 20-25% which puts Motos "take" 450-480.

BOM isn't going to be much different in $$ from Apple's. I would expect the aluminum enclosure (ipad) is a break even with the higher resolution display (xoom).

Where apple wins in margin is when they are the retailer. Then they get the wholesale and retail margins.

I think the Xoom only ships with 32gb on board. When the SD Card is enabled at least another 32 gb is possible. If the sd is sdxc (not a typo) that is pushed up dramatically. I think it's up to 1tb for XC.

I have to say that I am very intrigued by the Wifi Xoom. I played with it (VZ) for a few minutes at best Buy, but I didn't really get a chance to really try it out, as I couldn't demo any real apps or do heavy web browsing and see how thing ran. Still, seeing the massive list of upcoming honeycomb tablets really pushes me to wait and see how these other tablets do. Besides, there's no harm in waiting for Google to iron out more of the numerous bugs that people seem to be reporting with Honeycomb..

Yb:

IMO, the best thing going for Xoom vs. its hardware cousins is its considered a "Google experience " device. No encrypted boot loader, easy as pie to root and unlock.

For those that want full control of their property, like me, that's huge.

Fair enough, and such things are what drove me to get a Nexus One off contract ($529!) but at the same time, being an early adopter has some inherent financial and frustration risks as prices are likely to come down and more software and better support will likely come in time. I just don't want to throw down all the money on a Xoom only to find out that the HTC version worked just as well and was $100 cheaper, or for there to be a price drop shortly to compete better with the iPad/iPad2.

When my wife was looking at tablets a while ago I almost convinced her to get the Nook Color just because I wanted to root it and play around with it, but she really wasn't having any of that so I was shot down. ;p

What does this make now, four different screen sizes? Do you wonder if Samsung might be spreading themselves too thin by coming out with too many sizes, or is Samsung just unsure what people are looking for in a tablet?

Well, time will tell.
I think they (are going to) have 3 models: 7", 8.9" and 10".

I guess there are two ways of doing business:
- to make one model and tell the world what it needs,
- to start with choices and see what sells.

Apple is in the first, most of others - including Samsung - in the second.

Some people think 10" tablets are too large for extended use without a stand.

Some think 7" tablets are too small. Samsung's approach seems to be the goldilocks approach small, medium, large.

The 8.9" tablet could be "just right" for those who feel 7" tablets are too small and 10" tablets are too large. Plus the 8.9" wins on pixel density.
